Genius!

We protest a bill that might legally shut down innocent websites by shutting down

It reminds me of that Vietnam war protest where they killed Vietnamese people in front of the white house

SOPA is the Somalian official pirating act which declares that they will board the vessels and steal the rum off any ship which enters their waters

Not really, the people uninformed about it will now be informed and pissed off about the possibility of that sort of thing happening on a regular basis if it passes.

I'm kinda with frost on this. It seems a bit dumb to shut downa a website to protest shutting down. But then again, I see why its effective.

think about it:

a bill might get passed that could shut a website down.
the website shuts down for a day in protest.
everyone freaks out and complains about it being shut down.
people think 'shit, what if it was forever?'
and then SOPA loses support.

its a brilliant idea.

You want to say "How do you like that motherfucker?" to the people who support it and suddenly can't use frequent sites?

This is a great idea... I suggested it like two months ago on .net and also tumblr...

http://ducksaws.tumblr.com/post/14643163216/how-to-stop-sopa

How to stop SOPA
1: Convince Google, Facebook, Youtube, the internet, etc. to shut down their sites for a week to simulate SOPA

2: Tell viewers to send a letter to their congressmen

3: Let cool for 20 minutes before serving

Putting a little pop up that can be exited out of won’t do anything, people probably close it before they even read it. Actually SHUT DOWN the site without there being anything the viewer can do to unshut it down.

Sure, internet sites will take a hit in income, but if they really do believe that SOPA will shut them down, it’s a lot better than not existing anymore.

No, the internet is so under-informed on this subject that I want this to pass for them to understand that the internet will not asplode IF it does.

Obama has said MULTIPLE TIMES that he will not sign the bill. If you want to protest, fine. But pay attention to the news and ACTUALLY READ THE FUCKING BILL.

If a company sees something they believe is pirated on the internet, they get to shut down the site no questions asked. Sounds like it can throw a pretty big wrench into the gears of the interwebs to me.

Yeah, the attorney general does that stuff. The corporations don't have direct control over the internet.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like the bill, but I can't stand it when people spout false information as fact.

Well yes, they get a court order and then the site is blocked from us viewers or shut down. But it's still basically a company being able to shut down a website for any "pirated" content on it. This AT LEAST means an end to streaming, a ton of youtube channels, etc. or possibly sites like youtube being blocked completely.

From what the news has made it out to be at least.

News exaggerates. The US government has never been famous for going through bureaucratic proceedings quickly. Plus, the site will get a warning before being shut down. It's not like it's "one and done".

But with sites like Youtube, there's going to be more than one offense at a time; there are going to be constant offenses at all times.

The entire point of the bill is that companies will not have to wait through bureaucratic processes to have a site shut down. They can just get a court order and boom, and this is the argument that the corporation supporting sopa use; they can't "afford" to wait through government process when their content is being "pirated" online.

And when there are extremely wealthy media companies involved, the government will fly through any bureaucratics that are involved.
