This judge is a joke...honor student jailed

some of the comments on the yahoo page pretty much sums it up.What a fuckin prick.Knowing how corrupted/stupid judges can be,and knowing the place where I live,wouldn't doubt if this guy just did it because she's Asian

Jailed for truancy and tardiness... fuck that shit. If half the seniors in my school were reprimanded for skipping, we'd only have like 50% of them left.

the point is she was working two jobs to support her family after her parents left, and also taking two honours classes.
its only a 24h jail sentence and a $100 fine, but i still think its a dick move. this is going to backfire on the judge so damn hard.

Judge Lanny Moriarty said last month Diane Tran was in his Justice of the Peace court for truancy and he warned her then to stop missing school.

She was given a warning the first time and told not to do it again.
She brought it upon herself.

There is a time for discipline and a time for mercy I think, part of this is somewhat in her court due to the fact she was warned, the problem is, this. Where is the support? She should be eligible for some kind of financial assistance if her siblings can be considered as a dependent on her.

In all honesty, I can see the judges reasoning, he's doing his job, he can't let one case go due to pity, that's not how the law works. At the same time, they should have tried to work with her so that she can still attend school.

Both sides are wrong, but are also right at the same time.

Here is the most important part to me: She's a good person. I mean, I know nothing about her personally, but she's working to help her family, and she's working to further her education. And that is pretty indicative there. I see the judges reasoning, and Art, I agree with you, that one case can't be dropped in pity. But fuck. Jailtime for missing school? That's nuts. Especially for this girl.

That's what I'm saying, the result was a bit extreme given the circumstance, hence why they should have tried to work with her instead of going this route. It is very clear that she wasn't missing school because she wanted to, she was truly trying to better herself and the life style of her siblings.

Hopefully the publicity of this will force the judge to realize his mistakes and try a new approach on this and keep from ruining this promising young woman's futures by giving her a record she simply does not deserve.
