Valve did fight for it though. And it was either they charge for it, or it doesn't get released at all.

On their L4D blog I have followed since L4D1, they raised a poll for 360 members asking if they still wanted it, and explained if so they would have to charge for it.

Like a resounding number of people voted yes. Well in the thousands. So they released it for as cheap as M$ would let them.
