If I remember correctly the Wii only had a good 2000 blocks of memory. Which from what I remember translated roughly to 512 MBs.
I have had my wii for a good 3 years, play it every now and then. And even after downloading things on Brawl, and playing a good 40+ games I still have a solid 800 blocks of memory left.
Wii games are virtually tiny, even the larger ones only take up some small amount of memory.
So 32 gigs really does seem a lot.
Assets for the Wii were tiny in comparison, though - due to lower geometric detail, texture res etc.
While Wii games and older Virtual Console stuff will still take up minimal space, the Wii U itself is now (finally) running high definition content and able to run current generation games.
So a better comparison is the 360, PS3 and any current gen PC games. If Nintendo really want to get on board with current gaming, then dlc is in for a start.
For example, Blops 2 is confirmed for Wii U - now think about the inevitable dlc that will need to be installed. Countless other games will be the same. How about the amount of HDD space that BF3 eats up with all it's updates?
Now the console is HD, all assets will take up a huge amount more storage space over the Wii system.
32GB for the 'premium' system really is a pitiful amount in this day, and will only get you so far. Hell, I want a 32GB card for my Vita, and the assets required for that are far slimmer than what would be required on the home consoles.
At least it's easy to augment the Wii U with external drives, I guess, but I think it's a pretty poor showing really
