Bethesda is struggling to develop a version of Doom 4 for next-gen consoles, it is being reported.
According to Kotaku, the first-person shooter has been in development for five years, during which time the game has repeatedly changed direction. This includes the decision to effectively throw out three years of work and start all over again for next-gen consoles.
Apparently, the project isn’t even close to being finished.
The news was partially confirmed by Bethesda's vice president of marketing and public relations Pete Hines, who said in a statement, “An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect.”
“As a result, Id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know.”
Sources “with connections” to Doom 4 say that Id Software has been “plagued by mismanagement and a lack of communication that has frustrated staff both at Id and Id’s parent company, ZeniMax.”
Indeed, after the relative poor performance of Rage, Zenimax has cancelled Rage 2 and “downsized” plans for Rage DLC. Instead, Id’s entire staff has now been put on Doom 4.
Just when it’ll come out is anyone’s guess though.
Back in 2011, reportedly just a month before Id threw everything out and started again, news circulated that Doom 4 had been “indefinitely” postponed, a claim that Hines denied vigerously. He called it "complete bollocks.”
"Games are done when they are done and no title under development at Id has been postponed - indefinitely or otherwise," he said at the time.
