They've been teasing this thing for years so I would find it really funny if that's all they had.

I'm guessing it's not being talked about much because it's not really anything new or special at this point.

If it ends up being a compact machine with a lower than ever price point for a gaming computer, then it will be a big deal.

I had to go searching, but it looks like their announcement was really weak. No wonder no one is really discussing it.

They basically just announced a hardware beta for 300 Steam users, and that they will have something (maybe) to show sometime in 2014 (maybe)...

Really? That's it. That's Valves announcement? After all this time no concrete plans, or specs, or info, or hardware, or anything at all?
Why even have an announcement if you have nothing at all to say?

The name "Steam Machine" is pretty cool though.

Yeah, the fact that they didn't show any specific hardware or at least mention minimum/standard specs was a let down.

I'm not expecting much from the Steam Machine/Box from what I gathered in the announcements, but with the nVidia drivers announcement and now AMD's Mantle thingie, this shit may actually have a chance. It's still just a maybe though.

maybe they're still thinking of what to even put in it, it has to be cheaper than the consoles, otherwise the casuals they're trying to attract with this would just get console, or if it's much more than console, people would just build their own pc or get console+games

The name "Steam Machine" is pretty cool though.
The hardware beta is actually pretty awesome if the machines are actually decent.

But yeah, it was a pretty weak announcement. I mean it's nice to know the Steam Machine is a real thing but they could have at least gave us a little more detail.

Maybe tomorrows announcement will be better. Although it might just be a controller, the last line of this announcement hints at it and O+O kind of looks like a gamepad.

Stay tuned, though - we have some more to say very soon on the topic of input.
"Soon" in Valve time is 2-3 years I think. I don't think they've ever went as far as saying "very soon" before so maybe it could mean 2 days.

The trackpads can apparently be used as... multibuttons or something. And they can also work as speakers. Yes. Speakers. The touchscreen also seems kinda nice, reminds me of the Razer Blade and Wii U.

We must be looking at something different, because that controller looks like it could be brilliant.

The input pads look great and something that we should have seen years ago. I actually tried something like this at a CES (or E3) show around 2000 and it was great, but they never actually brought it to market. I imagine this is even more polished.

The additional slide buttons on the back are something I was surprised the DS4 and X1 controller didn't add this coming gen and should have been common sense to add. Shoulders and triggers look good. They should make the track-pads have 2 buttons though one inner and another on the outer ring.

The only thing that looks like it needs to be changed to me are the number of face buttons (needs more)and most likely their placement. In fact it looks like you could almost make a rotating ring of buttons that could be configured in different ways...

The controller alone took me from "I don't give a fuck" to "very interested" as quickly as it took me to read all the info on that controller.

The problem is that people still don't really know how it works. At simple glance it makes it look like using any of the face buttons would be a pain because of their placement. But apparently you can use about 8 buttons without removing your thumbs from the trackpads.

This is one of those things that you can't really say much about until you use it yourself. Like the Wii U controller. It looked kinda horrible for me, but from what I've read from people that have actually used it, it's very good.

I have my doubts about the controller, but I agree that it's hard to judge without having tried it. 

The Wii U controller is pretty goddamned horrible, though.

seems kinda cool. ive wanted an analogue keyboard so i can have analog movement while keeping the aim of a mouse, but if this works as it says, i can just have a controller with the aiming of a mouse instead Razz

mind you, the only thing i use my 360 gamepad for on Windows is Just Cause 2 and Skyrim.

although JC2 allows both systems to input at once, so i can drive around using the gamepad and if i get into a fight i can drop it and use KB/M straight away to aim easily, then pick it up again to drive away Razz

Like always, something different or new comes out and gamers start yelling "IT SUCKS!" without even trying it, understanding what they are even crying about or putting any thought at all into what may be beneficial about it.

You can also tell from looking at it that the 8 buttons you can hit with fingers on the pads are: 2 shoulders, 2 triggers, 2 rear-strip buttons and 2 track-pad buttons.

It probably needs a lot of tweaking for ergonomics, but everything is there to potentially make an improved controller.

Of course it could also turn out to completely suck.
