switching hosts.

This is just a question and in no way means its happening unless agreed upon.

Iv been debating switching hosts to a php based board. This means I could customize and add alot more.

Downside is forumotion will not allow access to our database. Meaning we wouldnt be able to tranfer our archives over.

We would have the same domain name, would have alot more options but lose our old topics and posts.

Thoughts on this?

What would we actually gain from the move?

Eh, I don't think it would be worth it. This forum seems to have all it needs right now and to start from scratch seems a little risky.

You'd have to be more specific on exactly what would be added on. Themes yeah, but I like this theme.

At the moment, I can't provide file hosting, which mainly effects me since I can't use javascript or dreamweaver to customize site, or allow file sharing an picture/video galleries.
My customization is highly limited, I could add a hell of a lot more on a php based site.
Which is ultimately what this boils down to.

What iv been thinking of is; creating the new site, showing you all the diffrence and putting it to a vote.

I chose forumotion because of my inexperience with the job.
I feel comfertable branching out now, but an hitting a wall due to the restrictions they have implemented.

Word. To be honest the thought of switching over gives me a bad feeling...

Yeah I had a forum before and everything got reset, and after that the post count of the whole forum didn't even get up to the post count that the individual members had before. It was a much smaller forum, 95 members and probably 10-15 active ones at its peak, but still it gives me a bad feeling about this.

I wouldn't mind a switch/stay; if you do decide to switch, I do like the idea of a test first before switching.

Yeah, we should see the test first.

There are two things necessary to make a switch:

-page that links members to the new site when they come to the original site
-Same layout as before so people will recognize it and know where to go

OK so I took a look at some of the posts in my old forum and the fact it was reset was actually not the primary cause of it dying, but rather the fact that it was already dead before and it was the 2nd or 3rd revival, so disregard what I said about that.

File sharing does sound pretty cool but the hoarder in me doesn't like making posts disappear. Couldn't you have a separate page on your domain for that though or does the host not allow that? I'm a little confused about how this hosting works.

It got shot down pretty hard. I just went about trying to squeeze out as much as I could from forumotion.

My issue was the restrictions to their php.
And their policy of not letting you have access you your own database.
Also..no file host...or ability to refrence .js or other files in my html.

I switched our versions during the last graphics update, which enables, e to muck about with the template base...but that's risky to say the least.
Im starting to become versed enough to work around some of the complications using alternate methods, so its not been an issue lately.

If you want to demo it I'll develop more of an opinion when I see it. Would we be able to transfer almost the site to the new host?
