Why are newspapers so depressing?

I don't read the paper much but when i do i find that for every 2 good storys there's about 10 bad ones...

The economy isen't working, there's so many health problems, murder, hit and run, possible tax increases, no good jobs everyones getting axed etc etc..

I guess the real world is pretty shitty but wow how can people read this stuff every day and be happy? Just reading it just makes me think "well damn what can we do..?"

Nah it is because depressing stuff grabs peoples attention more.

i notice this too, i guess happy stories just arent as interesting to read.

remember newspapers are just trying to put in stuff that readers will enjoy reading.

i thought it was kind of ridiculous how much press the shooting in arizona got a month or two ago.

I know, 6 people were shot and killed, and a congresswoman was injured.

but to put it in perspective, dozens of people die every day in homicides, and no one ever hears about it. why is it such a huge deal when 6 die at once? does the president have to go and give a speech? does every news channel have to focus on it for a week straight?

I agree with you.. We don't need to hear the same story multiple times.

well its less that it was told over and over again, but that SUCH A HUGE DEAL was made over it.

I actually really like watching the news. something kind of relaxing about it...

yeah, i mean its not like she was even a well-known politician or anything.

I think mainly cause that little girl was killed, so people freaked.

Thought I'd point out that Billy and his wife have given 30 billion dollars away to charity as well as starting the largest charity foundation in the world.

Sounds like I am being selfish, but I honestly think that charities profits would boom once the economy is fixed.

This. The economy is what matters right now, and needs to be improved greatly.

Also, the news is depressing because life isn't always sunshine and rainbows. Most of the world news isn't happy at all, it's just conflict after conflict, war after war, murder after murder.

As for the congresswomen being shot, I have to say I think you're being ridiculous about that. They talked about it a lot for a week or two right after it happened, and why shouldn't they? A popular congresswomen who was just meeting with people at a Safeway got shot, ffs. Are you guys really that heartless/apathetic that you just want your TV instead of giving a damn about what's happening in the world?

I don't read the papers, don't listen to the radio and I don't have a TV.

popular? Never heard of her. Yeah it's pretty f'd and it's not just about "TV" it's about maybe hearing something that matters now.


edit: I am mainly talking about newspapers though the news is usually more gentle. I hardly watch actual TV. And err doesn't makeing this topic show that i am concerned? I think your not reading everything.

Also it's how they write/report it. Around here any time we get snow they make it sound like the damn winter apocalypse is coming even if we only get like 4 inches.

first of all, the amount of money bill gates has is a drop in the bucket compared to the US economy.

And secondly, it has nothing to do with being heartless. im not saying that their lives didnt matter, or that i didnt care if they died, but the media really inflated this story. There are mass murders everyday in the US, and you NEVER hear of them. If one of the 435 congressmen gets injured, suddenly its worthy of a presidential speech, a national day of mourning, and a week or two of 24/7 news coverage.

It really doesnt add up.

Still fighting a lot in Afghanistan, while Iraq's starting to be controlled more by the local police and military I believe.
