Never heard of it => A: LOVE IT!!! or => B: HATE IT!!!
At first I was never gave it a shot, but then I chose the path of loving it. Started off with Naruto and Bleach (still watch these even today). However there are heavy weights that are sooo good.
Full Metal Alchemist - This is my favorite. It's about a world where alchemy is possible. Converting one thing to another via alchemy. Everything must balance, you cannot take something from nothing. "Equal Exchange". Side note: there is also the original version of this being the manga. It is great supplementary material, but I far favor the anime story line (although I love sloth in the manga).
Samurai Champloo - Samurai Era (amazing sword fighting), but also some how mixes in hiphop in an HILARIOUS way. Good story, atmosphere/world.
Death Note - This is AMAZING. It is an extremely serious anime series (none of the parts where it becomes very Japanese T_T faces when they're sad/humiliated). It's a somewhat complex story with very adult themes (no porn or anything, but very violent [goreless]).
Get Backers - Interesting concept and implementation. Special powers people - sci-fi'ish/fantasy style. Very cool concepts.
Ergo Proxy - Very dark, but extremely interesting concepts. It feels a bit lacking in terms of almost like it's not complete, they finish the story, but there could be so much more in that world, or even using that world in a completely different story. Also Lil Mayer is hot.
Eureka Seven - beautiful love story based Mecha (humanoid robots much larger than man, controlled by a pilot) style anime. Enough said, so good (surfing human controlled giant robots.. fuck yeah, Vascud crisis!).
Full Metal Panic - Some mecha mostly humorous actions with Mecha mixed in.
Wolf's Rain - Best atmosphere besides Egro imo (atmosphere = general feel + world, 3rd place is Eureka 7). Just watch. Disappointment is not an option even though it is . Worth it though.
Digimon - Nostalgia * 1000. Watched this as a kid. Youtube the evolutions.
Gengan toppa gurren lagann - It makes fun of anime, specifically how it's a constant escalation of power per side, and it takes it to the next level to infinity in such a humorous and entertaining way. This is more appreciated if you have watched several anime series beforehand.
