I haven't read the article yet because not only do I not care, I have been expecting something like this for a couple generations now.

Discuss.

Really dumb, makes me not want to buy the console. What do we do when new copies of the game are no longer around?

Download it. Or kick yourself for not buying it when it was available.

They need to stop being greedy. Almost everything has a used market and they still survive with great profits, the online code is semi-ok but this would be way too far. It's only a rumor though.

DRGN LRD 1213

My stance,

I have no problem with the current method of if you buy a used game you may have to buy a code in order to play online. The reason I don;t mind this is because the game company is still working on patches, balancing issues, and have to maintain the servers. so I'm fine with the vip codes and what not.

Now. If a used game can not be played at ALL in the future then I have a problem with this. THe game company made their money on the game its now mine, I can sell it or give it to someone else if I want to. Just like my car, or house, or books. SOoooooo Thats my thoughts.

TexasMace

TexasMace

It will make me vary weary of buying new games, that's for sure.

DL, has a good point about paying for codes as that's the way the game companies can make up for the loss of used games money lost.

Doesn't smell good, fellas.

If this happens I may have to boycott Xbox. Of course I'm sure other manufacturers would follow suite if Microsoft did this.

It shouldn't bother me since I buy almost all my games new but its the principle of the matter

Ante

It's a rumor with no grounds.

Dropped Da Soap

Dropped Da Soap

ITs still a valid rumor though. Microsoft and Sony have both expressed MAJOR discontent at the used games industry several times in the last few years. Hell last year alone even.

DRGN LRD 1213

DRGN LRD 1213

It may be a rumor but there a grounds for this rumor.

Like iot or not I can gurantee this is on their table of things to look at.

Ante

If you guys think they'll go through with this, you're bonkers. No one's going to buy a console that can't play a used game. They'd be shooting themselves in the foot, big time.

Not that I care, I don't buy used.

True, but you have to admit this idea has probably been tossed around in the offices of most major console/game makers

DRGN LRD 1213

DRGN LRD 1213

HA! Yea right just like everyone wouldn;t buy a game that didn;t require an online pass.

Microsoft are marketing geniouses. They could easily do this and get away with it.

SUre people will rant that its not fair, but game companies would be on board and kids would still line up to buy the consoles. They are not in anyway shape or form bonkers. I'd say they are fucking geniuses myself even if I don;t agree with them.

It has. We're already preparing for this.

Yes, because DRM has been such a good PR move for any company, ever.

DRGN LRD 1213

DRGN LRD 1213

But tell me how has it affected their company Ante? Really? They are still one of the largest global companies, will continue to be, will continue to make money hand over fist, and the consumer will continue gobbling up their products left and right.

I made my point so I am not a fan of used games tottally being nixed but when it comes down to it. People will cry and make a fit on forums but in the end everyone will still buy the console. I gurantee it!

Have you seen what has happened to developers who try to force DRM down the throats of consumers? It isn't pretty. And not for us, for the companies making the games. Translate that over to a whole console and you get a disaster. The worst I see coming from this is online passes becoming a forced thing, not a developer/publisher's choice. People aren't as fucking stupid as you make them out to be DL. Especially not gamers.

I will wait and see what happens. I'm not gonna put this one on the board yet. But I won't be surprised if it does happen

Gotta remember that this means that not only would you not be able to buy used games, but you wouldnt be able to sell games, or even let a friend borrow your game.

More reasons why this will never take form.

I cant see this happening, its too much unless all three console makers are in this together.I can see things like online passes becoming the norm for every game though. All of Sony's first party studios are going this route.

JrTapia1991

JrTapia1991

well if that's the case I'll be forced to buy even fewer games than I normally do.A good bit of the games I owned were used, but a good bit were brand new.I'd say about 50-50.

I'd only be able to get maybe 2 games a year if that's the case........kinda finding it hard to find 2 games a year worth full price now anyway...

I guess you could wait months till they go on a sale or something..idk.

yea that's true I remember there were so many people crying a river when LIVE went up to 60 a year and were gonna boycott and stuff online but nothing ever happened...

there's alot of shit I don't like about the industry but I'm not gonna boycott it.Games have always been my escape in life and it's cool to pop in a new game and play with friends...

probably not even gonna be able to afford the new console for a couple years anyway >__>

Since I got an xbox late, I'm already going to have a time lag before I buy the new one so....idc.

I got mine when Gears 2 came out....bad disc drive...took it back,my 2nd lasted a year and a half,got the red ring....on my 3rd one,had it since May 2010,going good.Black elite 120gb HDD.

I'm guessing since it's the jasper model it's helped it not die >__>

And.....my other xbox died on me when I was playing fallout 3 and it was installed to the xbox so apparently that won't save it from dying 0___o .

I install all my games anyway tho...I'm OCD about it Razz

Metalzoic

I can see the good and the bad in it.

Would it stop me from buying a system. Nope, not in the least. It wouldn't even be a consideration and that's from me, someone that trades every game in shortly after buying it.

Would the extra profits make up for the backlash from pissed off consumers? I don't know. Personally I wouldn't want to risk it.

Instead I'd push incentives for DD that can't be sold or purchased used and try to kill two birds with one stone.

Not sure if serious....

Anyways, I hope they don't go through with this since it means that you can't even bring a game over to a friend's house anymore. It is unfortunately the likely path that gaming is going in though.

I'd be cool with what Metal is suggesting, but I think that forced digital distribution is the worst thing that could ever happen to anything ever. And I don't even buy used, nor do I ever sell my games.

I'm sure you could still take a game to a friends house, you'd probably just have to log in with your GT.

As far as DD goes there would be a few marketing things you could pull that would make DD the better alternative than physical media by far. Do that for one full generation and after that you could go 100% DD and no one would care.

Personally I just hope we have better DD options this coming Gen, if we do that's how I'll buy all my games.

Oh and...

Did you used to pc game metal but got tired of the "catch up" game as well?I can see why you'd wanna throw up haha...

too much money just for it to be obsolete in a couple months Sad

they optimize consoles so much.As good as I think the xbox is now, the new one is 6x better?sounds good to me Razz

If they did do those though, I would hope they lower game prices.

As a fan of free trade (read: piy-ruh-cee) I'm not totally against DD, since it would make people who want to pirate shit have that option (ergo it would likely backfire) but I really like having physical copies of games. Like example, I took my copy of Black Ops over to Bmmflash's house last night, Peavs and I wrecked a few rounds of zombies. That was pretty sweet. I think I'd miss that if FDD came out.

The Adli Corporation

The Adli Corporation

i like physical copies myself.

ill buy digital for things like Minecraft and DLC, as they can't be found on disks, unless its a GOTY edition of a game.

chunckylover53

As long as there's incentives for DD i am fine with it. But i don't want a full price game as DD.

JrTapia1991

JrTapia1991

I think it would be bad for full on forced since not everybody has internet or internet fast enough.Mine is 10mb internet and it still took my bro like all day to download a game on demand game before...

xbox servers for downloading stuff seem to be dreadfully slow.If they made the download faster it wouldn't be so bad,but....they would also have to let us use any size hard drive we want and not their god damn over priced proprietary ones

Microsoft will never let us use standard hard drives.

Chewy

They already do let us use standard hard drives, they just limit the partition you can use to 16gb.

Yeah, but it had more to do with the non-stop issues and glitches involved with PC games. It also doesn't help that in a hobby already considered dorky, PC gaming is about as dorky as it gets. At least console gaming is becoming more widely accepted.

You naughty little pirate. You just reminded me that I fired a kid once for no reason other than I found out he pirated games.

It seems most people agree with you. They like the physical box, manual etc... so I see where you're coming from. So do you still only buy CD's or do you download your music?

Zillah wrote:If they did do those though, I would hope they lower game prices.

I agree there needs to be a trade off.

chunckylover53 wrote:As long as there's incentives for DD i am fine with it. But i don't want a full price game as DD.

I agree there needs to be a trade off.

There is an old thread on here where I, Doomsday, Sym and several others all have a debate about DD. There were some good ideas in that thread on how to make DD the better option between the two.

I'm an optimist so i see the good that could come from DD if it was handled smartly. Although you realists are probably closer to the mark being worried that you may end up with less for the same cost.

Sheep wrote:Heebs and I are going to get naked later. Want to come over?

Yes.

JrTapia1991

yeah I kinda have a feeling it wouldn't wind up being cheaper...maybe even more expensive in alot of cases like games on demand vs their physical copies

It has been this way with pc games for years now. It is not really if this will happen, just when. These online passes that you see with games are just the first step towards cd-keys. The good thing about this is that it should lower prices for games across the board so games prices fall faster and the sales are much better.

Duck

Duck

Sales are going to drop like a rock if the only option for months after release is a 60.00 new game, so I'd bet so.

Also, only buy CD music unless it's not available. I like physical copies.
