I never noticed it before since I always just played with the tv speakers but now with these turtle beach x12,for example, last night,a helichopper that was well in front of me would sound like it was right above me on kharg island conquest...

or on sharqi rush defenders, a tank that was really behind me,sounded like it was from the front or side,I forget which one...

but pretty much on vehicles, the location where it sounds they're coming from really isn't Sad (haven't paid attention to actual enemies,I just obviously shoot on sight)

maybe getting that surround sound processor would fix it?idk....

I play with the "war tapes" setting in BF3 since I always read it was best on BC2

The D2.0 sound from BC2 was the T Rex roar from Jurassic park

Pretty sure there's an option in the sound menu for headphones that you need to turn on.

Wartapes is probably the worst setting you could have it on for headphones.

I'd try the others till you find one you like.

war tapes just seemed to "pop" at me,I guess it's pretty much just a bass boost thinking about it.

Originally it was on hi fi I believe (don't even know what hi fi is...lol)

What?

How is your headset supposed to connect because that sounds like it might be the worst possible way to connect it for good sound.

it had a headphone jack like a computer for example. It said in the instructions to do that too if you didn't have audio output on the back of the tv...mine doesn't,only has audio input.

I guess my tv is more of a monitor anyways.Has a weird native resolution too, 1440x900 so I'm right between 720p and 1080p

Is this the headset you have?

http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/xbox-gaming-headsets/ear-force-x12.aspx

I see what you mean. Direct to the Xbox would be your best bet, but if you can't, you can't.

If your TV passes sound directly through without any dsp then hooking it up that way won't make to much of a difference. However if your TV has a bad sound processor in it like most do, then it could be taking the pure signal from the 360, degrading it to TV speaker quality and then passing it to your headphones.

This could give you static and loss of detailed sounds, loss of stereo sounds etc...

yeah those are the ones I have.Ever since I've had the tv I changed the sound settings to surround sound on it (virtual,or simulated) ,it seemed to just boost everything and make it sound better and clearer to hear.

Hmm....I'll try putting the BF3 option to headphones, then turning off the virtual surround sound in my actual HDTV settings.

because something's not right.......it shouldn't sound like a damn chopper is right on top of me when I was at base B when it's actually way out in front of me going towards the Alpha Base on Kharg island conquest.......

I'm thinking it's something to do with BF3 not being set on headphone, and also the surround sound setting on my tv possibly screwing up where the sound "comes from" direction wise....

because these x12s aren't surround sound,just stereo headsets.At least I think >__>

Sound like your TV's sound chip is hi-jacking the pure signal, changing it to what it thinks it should be and spitting it back out. And to be honest the sound chips in TV's (even most good TV's) are pure shit.

Check your TV's sound options to see if there is a setting for "pass-through" or something similar.

If you buy that surround module you would by-pass the TV entirely.

Xbox settings changed to Dolby 5.1 -> Fiber optic direct from Xbox to -> Surround module direct to -> Headphones. Profit.

Same. X12. The Component jack on my xbox is broken so I have no choice but to use HDMI.

And my TV has no headphone jack.

so, as of now, I can only get party chat through my headset and not actual game audio. I looked it up and theres some sort of cable I need to buy but I forgot what it is...

Probably RCA to 3.5 converter.
Or buy that Surround thing Jr's talking about and a fiber optic cable.

If you're getting no directional sound you're probably stuck in mono. Metal seems to know his shit with this though so listen to him.

Could be. I can't remember if there is a mono setting in the 360 dashboard.

If there is and it's set to mono... and then your TV is fucking with it trying to make it simulated surround it wouldn't know what the hell to do. HA!

I really really REALLY don't feel like going back to fucking batteries for my xbox 360 controller.............

but........this turtle beach is fucking buzzing all the time with the mic plugged in...

apparently it's something to do with using wired controllers along with turtle beach....

my cheap old MS mic never did this shit, you'd figure the expensive turtle beach wouldn't....

in my 360 settings it was digital stereo...I switched it to dolby digital surround sound in the settings, but stuff seems less "bassy" now and more quiet...I might turn it back on stereo or turn my tv surround sound back on

also switched it to headphones in the BF3 audio settings and it seemed to make everything quieter as well...

I dunno..............

gonna turn the game volume up on my X12 headset settings and see if that works.I dunno tho....I swear my tv sounded better with it's fake surround sound Very Happy

Don't turn on surround sound if you're not set up for it. Change your Xbox back to stereo.

Other than that I guess play with your TV and in-game options until it sounds decent to you.

maybe that's what screwed me up haha...I'll put it back to stereo.

I also turned back on my tv's surround sound. It makes everything more clear, loud, and bass-y.

I dunno what was up that one game,I haven't had any weird directionaly wrong noises when I played tonight...

I think the problem was in the BF3 settings it was on war tapes and not on headphones

I play on Wartapes with my Tritton Detonators and I have no issues with directional audio. Not sure what's up with yo shit, man. I have a pair of X12s too, but I only use 'em on my PC since I can wear them for hours on end without getting uncomfortable. I'll give BF3 a whirl with them sometime though and see if I can reproduce this problem.

Probably clipping, or something.

Nothing wrong with it, everyone's ears are built differently. Wartapes adds the extra punch to the soundscape that helps immersion immensely for me. To be fair, it doesn't make as big a difference in BF3 as compared to BC2.

JrTapia1991

JrTapia1991

ahhh,I think I found out why the directional sound was tripping me out man,

http://www.reddit.com/r/battlefield3/comments/napg1/overview_of_bf3_sound_options_xpost_from_a_comment/

from a quick google, that told me...

"A high dynamic range means the loud sounds (e.g. nearby explosions) will be loud, while the quiet sounds (e.g. wind blowing in the trees) will be fairly quiet. A low dynamic range means the loud sounds (nearby explosions) will be loud, and the quiet sounds (wind) will be slightly less loud.

Perceived volume is incredibly important for sound localization, so choosing a low-dynamic range option (e.g. the default, War Tapes) will sound loud and impressive, but you will lose a lot of information because all the sounds will be loud at the same time and therefore you will not be able to accurately determine its proximity by volume alone. This makes it seem like a chopper is directly overhead when it is really about 150 meters out. You'll definitely be able to hear it coming, but you won't have a sweet clue where it actually is."

so the reason the chopper sounded like it right above me.....when it was really WAY out in front of me,was caused by war tapes.

I really liked war tapes too for tv speakers, but for these headphones,I'll try out the headphone setting for a bit.

stuff overall seemed to have less "oompt" to it than usual.....but I'm going to put my xbox back to digital stereo, and my tv is back on surround sound EQ.

on a side note earlier I was tinkering with my laptop and found out it has surround sound and stuff too...I turned it on,but didn't notice much, but I figure it couldn't hurt to have on Razz

The X12s are really comfy...got some batteries to use now, energizer rechargeable...wanted sanyo eneloop but walmart only has duracell, energizer,or (yuck) rayovak...

edit:damn man,I just looked up those Tritton and I think I would of rather gotten them instead of the turtle beach....I like the option it says of turning off that voice mic monitoring crap and you can remove the mic and it already comes with the HDMI adapter which is nice...

eh.........if I ever need another set one day I'll probably get those Trittons Wink

I'm so new to any kind of audio stuff >__>

That's really weird, I've never had a problem with wartapes. Maybe it's because I play at such a low volume since I'm usually in a party with you guys.

Awww... I was going to explain to you what's wrong with wartapes, but you beat me to it.

That explained it really well. Basically its dynamic range is crushed and then it has a ton of reverb poured on top which gives it that sound-in-a-can sound. It's really made to be used with audio equipment that already has pretty bad dynamic range (tv speakers, lower end stereo/surround equipment etc...). The better your audio equipment is the worse wartapes will sound.
