According to this it sounds like if you want to be proficient in either role, be it an AG or AA jet, you'll have to sacrifice something to do so. If you focus on ground targets to lose out on air defense and AA combat capabilities and vice versa, for those of you getting this for PC, I've been practicing on being an aviator. The controls and feeling may be completely different than what was on BF2, but having a grasp on how to fly with a PC again will certainly help.

Just wish they'd have a confirmed date for Open Beta, it's supposed to be tomorrow 9-11-11 if the supposed date is true.

chunckylover53

I've heard the release date is somewhere in the 20's now might just be a rumor though.

I just need to get back into the habit of using my BF2 side of my automatic responses, instead of other flight sims I've been playing since the last time I played BF2, and I am solid on that.

As long as latency is not an issue...

Oh the horrors...

Razz are they going to have a Beta on 360?

er....only to the limited edition medal of honor people tho right?....never got that game.

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

Nope, as far as I know, the game is OPEN beta to EVERYONE, the MoH people may get a 24-48 hour head start, but as far as I know everyone, console players included, are invited.

@Storm I never was good at flying when I was younger, lacked the patience and awareness to fly. Question, how did you manage to keep track of the ground in BF2? The engine is so old that when I'm practicing I find myself getting disoriented when the ground vanishes. I really want to become better, but there really isn't any good flight sims out there that are current.

StormEye

StormEye

They mentioned open beta is not out of question, but I think that is only for PC.

No, beta IS open and cross platform.

MoH purchasers get a 48 hour headstart on it.

Edit: This has been confirmed millions of times already, so it's not speculation.

If I am remembering the controls correctly, I doubt though so bring in your own knowledge as well and tag along with me, I pressed view change button 'c' twice and went into third person cinematic view which will be always oriented at correct ground air orientation. If you see yourself flipped, you are flipped.

But I usually remember how much I turned in my head automatically because I've been playing flight sims for a VERY long time.

How do we participate in the Beta?

Ante

Have to wait on DICE for that one. I'm assuming the same way the beta worked for BC2, whatever that was.

StormEye

StormEye

PC would be easy to imagine. Go to forum, download, install, crash comp. LoL

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

Unfortunately no information has really been given. I'm sure it'll be announced and everyone will be squealing like a bunch of twilight fan girls at a midnight premier when it is finally out.

chunckylover53

If it's like BC2 it'll be in the demo section and you just download it. It just gets removed+stops working when they close it.

Artimise Flare

Do you have any suggestions for any good flight games storm? The only ones worth noting as of late seem to be based in WWII that being IL-2 Sturmovik Wings of Prey.

StormEye

StormEye

Are u looking to practice? Or are u looking for something to enjoy?

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

Kind of both if I can help it. Though I've been itching for a decent flying game that is not on console for some time. Shame the Ace Combat series isn't on PC.

StormEye

StormEye

Jar~

HAWX is on PC, but tbqh, if you are in it for practice, BF2 is the only one you should really touch.

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

That's a shame, though I'm honestly not surprised. A good flying game hasn't really been released on PC for well over a decade or so it seems. I'm really not all that good yet, I still am getting used to how high to fly, how to get my bombs to land on target and fly effectively in the various view modes.

I'm looking forward to being able to see the freaking ground when BF3 comes out, the most disorienting thing for me is that I can't see my freaking target until its right on top of me in BF2.

StormEye

StormEye

One thing they need to restrict is the theatre view mode for jet in BF3 or else people will abuse it like everyone does in BF2 to see enemies on their six and locate other targets. Heck, disable 3rd person entirely on jets. They have free view from cockpit, which is good enough for target aquisition, no need to god eye mode. LoL

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

I noticed that too just from watching videos, it seems almost unfair IMO. If anything, make it so you can only go into third person view from the rear. Would be nice if it came down to having a squad telling you "You've got a bogie on your six!" or what have you.

StormEye

StormEye

What you mean a squad tellin you? Most likely he is busy farming kills off of some poor fellow waiting for his plane to spawn. LoL

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

Namely you lol, I should have said "Wingman" or what have you. Not sure how many SEC'ers are going to be aviators really, if I'm not going to be in a jet, I may just be in a helicopter or something. We'll have to see.

Get Microsoft Flightsim 2004. There are tons of military jets you can dl and add on to your game. There's no combat but at least you can practice maneuvers.

StormEye

StormEye

This will sum up what I'm going to be doing in BF3, mostly.

lol, I don't know if I'll be a wookie or support really. My playstyle has always been one of helping out for the most part or engaging from afar.

most of my IRL friends are going engineer or assault, leaving me the role of either giving ammo or spotting. CAS may be another thing since none of them are really good at operating vehicles that are not ground based (One being an exception, but she's mainly a ground pounder)

Out of curiosity storm, what nationality are you? Your location says Hong Kong so are you Chinese or are you just visiting?

Japanese/Thai here.

StormEye

StormEye

Korean, with international background (but 100% korean, just many MANY overseas experiences).

Artimise Flare

Nice, I really hope to go and travel the globe. Would love to go back to Japan, got to go back in 2007 and loved every bit of it. Perhaps meet a cute girl whilst traveling and such, never know.

Been screwing around in BF2 for the past hour or so, finally getting the hang of doing bombing runs, though my MG skills could use some work. I'm actually a little surprised that they have us flying around in F18 Super Hornets in BF3, would have thought they would have had us in Raptors or something similar. Then again, we play as Marines and I don't think the navy can use those jets due to the fact that they can't land on carriers.

I also noticed that I'm not getting as disoriented as much as I was before when I started flying around. Hopefully I'll be able to dive into BF3's flying just as easily as I am in BF2 and be a decent enough pilot to compete with the other veterans. I don't really play flight sims, so I don't know all the fancy maneuvers but I'm sure that will come in time.

StormEye

StormEye

Have you flown F15 yet? Its the best bomber in the game.

Just know and compare few factors and you'll know what to do (generally in any flight sim).

Top speed
Altitude
Turn radius
Stability
Climb rate
Fuel & Weapons system (but this is not important in BF series as it stays level playing field)

Usually tighter turning planes have lower climb rate and top speed, while opposite is the case for the other. So don't get into a turning maneaver contest with fast turning jets, and do things like half loop transition and do opposite half loop and draw 8, instead of complete circle while engaging after burner and such. Just get shot down from good pilots and you'll learn. Heck, I've been getting shot down by AIs from various flight sims and even that helps.

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

Yeah, my biggest problem right now is more of an issue with the graphics limitations of BF2. I have trouble keeping track of where my target is after 200+feet since the ground disappears at that altitude, so when I come into bombing runs, I hesitate for a second, and that usually has me crashing into the ground, or not coming in at a steep enough angle to keep my bombs together.

I for whatever reason fly the F15 better than the F18 in BF2, perhaps it's because it's a little slower and more ponderous in some sense due to it being a "bomber".

Probably a correct observation. It also limits you from makng sudden erratic movement which in your case would prevent you from crashing or making errors while flying due to surprises relaying through your controls.

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

I'm determined to get better at this, slowly ever so slowly I'm improving. I think I got my layout for my joystick set up now. I hope they'll allow you to fly in Beta, would be nice to be able to test it out (If I ever get the chance to get into the jet lol) Truly can't wait Very Happy

StormEye

StormEye

I will probably go with Keyboard only + mouse for quick aiming, as I got no space for joystick at the moment. I did that for majority of the time anyway, and only really used joystick if I know the other guy is beating me only because he is suspected of using joystick.

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

I'm lucky I suppose that my desk is fairly spacious, so I don't have that problem. I can't really get used to using a K/M as far as jets are concerned, I can use them when I'm flying a helicopter, but not jets.

StormEye

StormEye

In the OLD days, it was the only method possible for control for me playing some dos based flight sims, and I'm fairly comfortable with it.

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

I never was into flying games until recently, the greatest exposure I had was to Combat Flight Simulator and the Ace Combat series.

I never was too interested in it until recently, perhaps it's because I'm joining the Air Force, but I've been developing an even greater interest into aviation and combat flight games. I'm actually having a blast seeing my improvements as I rocket through the skies in BF2. I can see why people loved flying so much back in BF2, even if I did use to whine about how OP the J10 felt.

StormEye

StormEye

If BF3 would even remotely overpowers jets, there will yet again one more clear divide between the types of people whom populate servers with jets and servers without. Also, You'll see 20 out of 64 will hang out in the air field. LoL

Artimise Flare

Artimise Flare

I won't doubt that it would still happen if the jets were balanced. It happens with the helicopters all the time! I usually stayed away from aircraft back in the BF2 days because I knew I sucked, and someone far more capable was better off taking them than I.

At any rate, I forsee a great deal of TK'ing over vehicles if that "feature" is brought back. If I'm not flying a jet, I'll most likely be in a chopper if I can help it.

StormEye

StormEye

There is a reason why people waiting in airfield usually had M95.

You mean lean? Might be cool, haven't seen it used in a console game in a long time.

You can have a "free look" in my "cockpit."

Only way to do that would be to make a freelook button, or fire with X/Y.
