The band name is basically "lead singer/voice and friends"

Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble
The Jimmi Hendrix Experience
Other Examples

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Yeah, that seems to be the the way it goes.

I guess this puts an end to the drummer and bass player thinking that they are important.

I'd have to agree with that. Only slight exception that I can think of would be Nine Inch Nails. Trent has played lead on a couple of the albums, but doesn't always do it during the live shows. Otherwise, yes, I agree with what you stated about the others.

Drums and bass are incredibly important. I guess alot of it depends on genre though. The kind of music Im into and write would just sound hollow without a very solid rhythm section. But in more traditional rock, its easier to be a singer/songwriter and have a basic backing section. So Im split ha.

Petty isn't the lead guitarist, just the song writer.

Neither is Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band, the lead for him is Stevie Van Zant
