Considering you find it in the graveyard, it's a pretty troll move by from.

Off the top of my head, there are maybe 2 items that are actually useful, the key and the firebomb set, and the bombs only if you want to get a big hammer really early.

Doesn't the key give you access to areas (and items) you wouldn't normally have access to that early in the game (or without the difficulty in getting there)?

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought that was the case.

Key gives you access to a few things early, but you'd get them all eventually. The most useful part of it imo is getting to Blighttown via New Londo rather than going from the Depths.

EDIT: And getting through Havels door early. That's pretty awesome.

Can't you skip over Blighttown with the key, well upper Blighttown?

That's pretty solid, Blighttown is a laggy mess.

No, key makes you go through upper Blighttown first. Going from the Depths starts you in lower Blighttown. You're supposed to go to upper Blighttown after killing Quelaag, and use it as a shortcut back to Firelink.

Yeah it pretty much takes you to the end of it though, not the first part of it.

If you want to go skip upper Blighttown without a Master Key, you can run by the drakes from the Basin. The real key to the New Londo door is at the very end of Blighttown.

So while you won't go from the start to Blighttown right away, without the Master Key you can still skip the upper area.
