A 4-year-old boy died after being shot in the head Wednesday morning in Akron.
The boy has been identified as Jamarcus Allen, who lived on McKinley Avenue in Akron.
Jamarcus died about 10:30 a.m. at Akron Childrens Hospital.
Police are trying to determine how the child was injured. The boys father is being questioned by detectives. No charges have been brought.
The boy was with his father when the man flagged down a Summit County sheriffs deputy about 9:30 a.m. at the corner of South Arlington Street and Davies Avenue and asked for help. A witness said he saw the father lying on the ground with the boy on his chest. The deputy grabbed the boy and took him to an ambulance.
The cop approached the vehicle and the guy just laid on the ground and he had a child in his arms, said Robert Leslie, who noticed the commotion while working at Monroe Muffler on South Arlington Street. He was talking to the guy, I dont know what he was asking him, and then all of a sudden, the officer finally yanked really hard, grabbed the [boy] and ran to the ambulance and the ambulance just took off like crazy.
Police at the scene were searching the area for evidence connected to the shooting. A gun had not yet been recovered. However, police were waiting for a warrant before searching the fathers Ford Taurus.
A single gunshot hole through the roof of the car was clearly visible. The hole was above the rear passenger seat, where a pool of blood could be seen. It appears the bullet was fired inside the sedan and exited through the roof.
Police Lt. Rick Edwards said investigators are sorting out what led to the shooting and have put all available resources on the investigation.
This is still an evolving situation, he said shortly after the shooting. Were still trying to find out where it happened, how it happened and what happened. So, at this point, we we dont have a lot to go by other than we had a 4-year-old who died.
