The creator of popular PC title World of Tanks has announced the acquisition of Day 1 Studios, the developers of F.E.A.R. 3 and Fracture.
The new studio will concentrate exclusively on the development of a new, unannounced console title.
Wargaming’s CEO Victor Kislyi said, "The move into console game development is a huge step for Wargaming, as we begin to expand our presence into new platforms. We are looking forward to sharing the fruits of our labour soon."
Though no details have yet to be released about the game, the Head of Wargaming’s new studio, Denny Thorley, did hint that it will be free-to-play.
"Wargaming is a clear leader in the free-to-play space and helps set the standard on which all other games in the genre strive for," he said. "Our team is extremely excited to start the first console project for Wargaming."
Speculation time: Prior to making F.E.A.R. 3 and Fracture, Day 1 worked on MechAssault and MechAssault 2. And, more recently, the company announced Reign of Thunder, a... wait for it... a free-to-play PC mech game.
The website for that game currently reads, "Thank you all for your support and awesome battles. Reign of Thunder is powering down for now, but fear not. Follow us over at wargamingwest.com for even bigger battles to come."
"Could Day 1 Studios be bringing Reign of Thunder to next-gen consoles? We’ll have to wait and see"
