Ok so I thought I knew what I wanted but the card I originally wanted has been on back order for over a month and I'm sick of waiting and I can't find any other vendors in Canada that have any stock on hand.

I could order from newegg but they'd ship one in from the States and fuck paying duty on top of sales tax so that's a no go. actually just checked and newegg hardly has any 7970's at all.

I was originally going to get a Sapphire 7970 GHz edition but no one has any
so I've been looking at a few suppliers and it seems my best bet would be a Gigabyte flavor.

Now I could go 7970 GHz for 475$ and get 3 free games I don't really care about

or

I found a sale for a Gigabyte GTX 680 for 490$ + 20$ mail in rebate plus I would get metro last light for free which I was going to get anyway so that saves me another 40 bucks down the road.

So I'm leaning pretty heavy towards the 680 at the moment.

Just wondering if anyone can offer some experience with AMD vs NVIDIA or Gigabyte GPUs

I'll check reviews and benchmarks in the next few days and pull the trigger at the start of next week no doubt.

Just wondering what you guys think.

(edit: So I was able to track down a Sapphire 7970GHz edition after all...just pulled the trigger Very Happy )

It all depends on what games you play. Generally though the 7970 is the better card. You could also get a 7950 for $300. The 7970 is only around 10% better than it.

to save even more money the 7950 is good and comes with the free games as well and is like 270 maybe Razz

I've heard too many bad things about XFX brand to get them....no point really, they don't offer the lifetime warranty anymore

Everything is more expensive here... 7950 is 320-360 depending on the brand.

hmm so looking at benchmarks 7970GHz is quite a bit better in some cases. I'll probably go that route. Gigabyte seems to be the only readily available one to me so I'll go with them.

GTX 680 my man

I read that the 7970 chumps the gtx 680 plus it's much cheaper *shrug*

Yeah 7970 seems like the better card according to benchmarks.

I freakin' love my 6970. I had such bad experiences with 3.. yes 3, Nvidia cards. I had an 8800 and it was actually alright, but it did run hot. Then I got a 270 and that sucker ran so hot it'd crash. I installed a aftermarket fan which helped, but what ended up fixing the crashing was lowering the clock and under-volting it. It eventually failed though anyway. I used a 260 as a spare from my uncle (who had probs with it) so then I had probs with it. Then I got my 6970, I've had it for more than a year and not a single issue. Not even any driver issues (I did play Bad Company 2 a lot and BF3 a bit, and a bunch of other games).

Yeah that's pretty much what I'm looking for too. I got 500$ vacation pay on top of my regular pay last week so I can put the whole 500$ towards a card if I want and I don't want to have to upgrade For 2-4 years... Maybe more if I can get away with it decently.

So 7970GHz seems to be the way to go for me.

kinda wish I went with 7970 just for overkill Razz whenever in a couple years I get another card I'll go with the -970 version probably when it's dropped in price after ~10 months

Or you can go with a card that does not have a number to it. Like Titan

Gonna order GPU soon...(edit:just pulled the trigger!) Sapphire_hd_7970_vapor-x_ghz_edition_amd_radeon_graphics_card_-_3gb_-_11197-12-40g

I didn't think any Sapphire 7970Ghz were available in Canada but they had some mislabeled on NCIX as the regular 925MHz editions but with the price of the GHz editions. The model numbers match the GHz model too so I should be good.

Excited! Very Happy

I am skeptical of AMD coolers

I read reviews and Sapphire vapor X is supposed to have the best temps on the AMD side.

it's not the exact bundle...I just took the first image that popped up in google. The bundle I got was FC3 blood dragon, Crysis 3 and Bioshock infinite.

still some great games in there. Crysis looks cool and I hear great things about bioshock.

I haven't really looked at it much...I know it's some 80's looking sci fi shooter...that's about it. Haven't heard anything bad about it really.
