Sym, I think the point Soap is making is that for a second job, that is a damn good one. And he's absolutely right. 4k supplement income is absolute heaven when you're single and don't waste much. But you're right in that education is the future, and that to be competitive nowadays, you HAVE to have very solid schooling.
Ars, there are a few key differences in our societies. Your dad was able to support himself and your entire family (and just off topic that sounds like a really cool story to share) off of his salary, and I have no doubt that it was great for y'all. In serbia, it's the same. If you're earning 4000 USD per month, that's a bit over a third of a mill in serbia. That is a metric fuckton of money over there. It's not so much that it's a different standard of living, but the price adjustment is the issue. Honestly, if you factor it in, it's more expensive to live in America. It just is. To show an example: it costs me 200 serbian dinars to go see a movie in Belgrade. That's about 2.40$. It costs me another 50 RSD (republic of serbia dinar) for popcorn, maybe 100 for a drink. All totalled, for three and a half bucks I'm going to the movies. It's like that across the board, save for higher-end luxury imports.
In America, everything costs money. Fucking everything. And to truly live the "ideal american life" (married, house in the suburbs, 2.3 kids, 2 cars, 401k, all that BS) you need to get an education.
Oh, and as Sym mentioned, a vast majority of the (implicit: American) rich are absolute crooks. Fixing contracts, lobbying, backdoor dealing, all of this shit is standard practice. It's true, we have some hardworking ultra rich people, but the vast majority did it by stepping on the classes below them and sucking them dry for every last dime.
