was actually one of the better descriptions of pointers i've heard.

and heat death is pretty interesting to think about. I think it's the subject of Mojang's new game.

All the energy we have comes from the sun. Fossil fuels are the result of long dead organisms that stored the sun's energy. Wind currents are caused by differences in heat and pressure around the world, which is caused by the sun's energy reaching certain places, and I think by interaction with the magnetic poles of the earth, which exists I think because of the hot core of the earth. Same thing with ocean currents. Solar energy is obvious. Nuclear fuel like plutonium and uranium were created by the fusion process of the sun iirc, just like every other element besides hyrdrogen.

So the only exceptions are geothermal heat, which comes from the earth, which I think will cool down before our sun, and fusion reactions, which do the same thing that suns do in fusing hydrogen into helium.

So actually, after all the suns go out in the universe, I think it would be fairly simple to go and find remaining hydrogen to use for fusion or other nuclear fuels to use for fission. I mean seriously, you're comparing the abundancy of human energy needs to the probability of finding common elements throughout the entire universe in asteroids or planets.

except the heat death implies homogenization of energy, meaning that ALL suns have gone out. If that is the case, then the basic star map that we have becomes one blank field, and finding anything in the cosmic void is like trying to find a blue marble in the ocean.

im sure if humanity survives that long we'll have come up with something to navigate by besides stars. we'll probably be traveling by wormholes or something.

when the entire universe is black, finding your way home would be next to impossible. Think about it, the only sources of light in the endless expanse of space are gone. You have no reference points.

In effect, you have no pointer to say, "hey, you're here!"

if we're capable of interstellar flight... we'd bound to have found better ways to navigate than relying on light Razz

I have a feeling humanity won't live that long, but maybe. Interesting to think about, I love stuff about space

Could be. With ridiculous technology and resources we could seed space with navigational beacons, like lighthouses or such.

We'd probably need a number we can't count to currently, but who knows. Maybe we will be that advanced later.

yeah i still say we'll be traveling by wormhole.

hell, maybe we'd just make out own suns. The big bang had to happen somehow, unless you want to say it was created by a god, if humanity is still around by that time we'll probably have figured out how the universe got here and how to create other universes.
