1DSL phone cord question Empty DSL phone cord question 2013-08-30, 01:27

The DSL modem has two different types of cord going into it. One is the one that goes into the phone jack in the wall (the square one), the other is the actual Cat 5 ethernet (elongated rectangle). I am trying to figure out what the specific one for the phone jack one is called. Not the thin, normal phone cord that is normally cream coloured, but the thicker one that the DSL company gives you because I need a longer one. What is that one called?

Notice how the green wire, the one I am meaning, is thicker than "normal", thin phone cords? It's that I want.

CAT5 or CAT6...both are ethernet cables...

You could always take the original cable with you to wherever and compare...

ETA: Its probably printed on the cord somewhere actually.

Me either.

I just cat 6 cables are DSL cables so I thought it MAY help.

Sorry I cant be of more help.

Honestly in this case I would just call up your guys phone/cable company and just ask what kind of cable it is. Most people dont deal in dsl anymore, so it might be tough to get a concrete answer. Unless either Tom or Storm knows, then yea.

Good luck my man

I was thinking that too. But why is it thicker than normal? That's what's stopping me from setting up my DSL. Trying to get everything right.

Have you compared inputs?

Take it out and compare it with a normal phone cord

It might be the same input

I ran it from the jack in the wall at my old apt all the way up stairs to my room where I kept the modem, and seemed to still have a football field worth of cable left lol.

edit: reading the amazon review that rj11 seemed to make their connection faster,so that would probably be better...I only had shitty 3mb internet with century link, fastest they had available here

Yeah, you can get regular RJ11s virtually anywhere.

And like ethernet cables, it doesn't matter the brand or the price.

We are still using the same cable we used almost 9 years ago when we had dial up. Thing has been through years of rain and mud, still works like a beaut.

Why is your internet cable outside in the rain and mud?

We had a problem with all our phone jacks through out the house. So instead of fixing em, we just plugged one end of the phone line into the phone box in our driveway, and just pulled the other end through my moms bathroom window, throw her bathroom, stapled it to the ceiling, ran it into her room, stapled it down the wall, then plugged it into a splitter, plugged one cord into the modem, and the other into our phone.

BOOM.

It's just a normal phone cable, that's what an RJ11 is.

Their's probably just has a thicker jacket.

Would've commented earlier but just now saw this thread. I was on DSL up until last year when my ISP upgraded. I know the original question is already answered, but I saw where someone mentioned Cat 6 so I thought I'd clear up something about it...pretty much the higher the #, the newer/better the cable type is. The actual performance difference between 5/6 is Cat 6 handles up to 250 MHz, where Cat 5 can only handle 100 MHz. Linking a webpage that explains the actual differences if anyone is interested... http://www.ehow.com/list_7471829_types-utp-cables.html

Also DSL/regular phone line = RJ11 connector, Cat5/Cat6 = RJ45 connector
