Well I changed my mind on the phone because this laptop is nearly dead >.>

I saw numerous desktops I would like but one had shared graphics which I dislike. and one had nothing but the RAM, hard drive and processor. My friend suggested I built one myself because it's cheaper.

How much cheaper would it be and since I don't do much with hardware and I know more about software, what items should I be looking for?

I would suggest going to a couple local places that build computers and getting quotes. That's what I did. Got a good desktop for a very reasonable price. Personally I think it's the best bet if you want something really good (which you generally can't get out of the box) at a reasonable price and can't build a computer yourself.

You might even be able to find a place that will put the pieces together for you, which will allow you to buy the parts yourself, cutting cost even more. Try asking.

Main things you should be looking for:
Case
PSU
CPU
RAM
GPU
Motherboard
HDD
Fans
Bluray/DVD drive

And that should cover everything on the inside of the computer.

You should find someone who knows what they're doing to OK any major purchases to make sure that they are compatible with each other.

Building your own computer is about halve as much as buy a pre built one. Also please buy the parts online and not in an overpriced store like best buy.
