so a lot of the music pushers are into some of the more hard stuff.
so what i need for you guys is a "Metal 101" music list.

something that bridges the gap between mainstream or alternative rock, but is a good introduction into more hardcore metal music.

Wish I could help, Epyk but I listen to more mainstream metal like Pantera, Slayer, Disturbed, and Demon Hunter.

Personally I feel that if you stray too far from mainstream, you get into individual tastes rather than something enjoyed by many.

What is this for exactly?

Gotcha. Again, Greg's stuff is great, but I would include some mainstream stuff just to keep it interesting. Speaking for myself a little. I listen to a lot of hard stuff, but I have no interest in Death Metal Galactica or Eat Your Babies or whatever other obscure stuff has been posted. But I'd participate in more well known stuff.

You want a list of bands or what?

I'll jump in!!!

BTW- this is really my opinon
I guess we really need to get to the roots:
Black Sabbath- this is really where "metal" started, and is a good place to start.
Judas Priest- Continues in the same vein as Sabbath, but a newer edge to it plus a new musical venture in that there are 2 guitars (sabbath used one)
Iron Maiden- Much more melodic than Priest and Sabbath, using the dual guitars for harmonies (alot of melodic bands quote them as influences)
Metallica- early Metallica (first 3 albums) added punk influences, much faster than earlier bands
Alice In Chains- the metal version of grunge, darker themed music, and even darker melodies
KORN- I will get shot for this by some people, but KORN did bring something to the table, the 7-string guitars they used brought new sounds, and using rap/R&B styling in their sounds

I guess that's were I would start, current bands: (once again, Greg, anytime man)
Bridge gap from mainstream
Stone Sour
Megadeth
Staind- (more hard rock, but bleeds into metal once in a while)
Godsmack
Disturbed
a bit heavier
Killswitch Engage
All That Remains
Trivium
Bullet for My Valentine
In Flames

I think they blur the line between prog and metal. It's not progressive metal per say but they kind of tread the line between the two genres. They are both and yet neither.

as for the thread are you looking for bands that bridge the gap between mainstream rock and metal or are you looking for bands that are in between mainstream and super obscure within the metal world? or maybe that bridge the gap between mainstream metal and more "hardcore" stuff.

I don't know how much help I can be since I don't really listen to much current stuff. I'm big on old school metal.

Speaking of Korn. Guess who got the last, most rarest of the albums. This guy. I tell you, Korn III: Remember Who You Are was hell to find. Wen through at least 20 different stores to find it. And there was one left. I now have the complete collection of their albums.

No I was siding with you. But you say "Korn" anywhere and people trash you for it. I hate that.

I wore out the first album three times. I have them all on my computer now so I'm not tearing up CD after CD after CD.

Grey have you seen Who Then Now Bitches? It's the first DVD documentary of Korn. Great DVD.

What gap are we trying to bridge here? The gap between utter mainstream shit and basic rock/metal, or the gap between more tame stuff like Led Zeppelin and Sabbath to Metallica and Iron Maiden, or the gap between those and some less normal stuff, like Megadeth? Or the gap between any of those and really weird stuff like Fetus Field Goal or Baby Seal Buffet etc.

Why not both? Everything draws connections differently. Even sometimes when comparing the same stuff.
