Finally figured out why my PC wouldn't boot! I took my mobo out of my case, kept the RAM and CPU in, and hooked it up to the PSU. Used a flathead screwdriver to make a pseudo power switch and it fired up! Apparently, my case is shorting out my mobo, so I fucked up when I mounted it. Rig should be up and running tomorrow or the next day, then I can game with you guys Very Happy

I made the same mistake with my first PC.

In fact, I actually got the mobo exchanged TWICE.

After a while, when I realized what was wrong, I felt really bad for the store that I bought my parts from.

The only problem is that I only got two of the screw things you need, when there's six holes. So now I'm not sure what to do D:

You can try to mount the mobo with longer screws, and carefully "hang" it within the case, until you get the necessary stand off pins.

Thats what I did before.

But isn't it supposed to come with the correct amount? I'd rather not have to wait a few weeks for some freaking screws to come in the mail, but I've checked everywhere and there were only two. I wonder if I can find them at a hardware store?

StormEye

StormEye

You can buy them at computer parts stores.

Regular hardware stores might have it, but I have no idea.

Yeah that's really weird that your mobo didn't come with the correct number of standoffs.

Wait, apparently my case has pre-installed standoffs o.O

So why wasn't it working?

I'm gonna try to carefully remount the mobo, and see if I can fix it.

Are you sure they are pre installed?

Is your video card installed right?

I haven't really had the chance to mess with it yet. Been busy with a few things today. Gonna go at it right now and hope I can fix it for good.

Twitchy

Video card seems to be fine...

Is it possible that my computer just isn't recognizing my TV as a possible monitor?

StormEye

StormEye

Possible.

Some vid cards refuse to recognize certain display types on the first time boot up, especially when you have not had a chance to go into windows and install drivers.

It may also be your bios that has different launch order.

Well, I don't wanna waste $150 on a monitor, just to find out that something's wrong with my video card. And I don't have any old monitors, since my last one broke right after we got this laptop. This is quite a pickle >.<

Try connecting the monitor through your motherboard?

Twitchy

Twitchy

How do I do that?

Your motherboard should have a HDMI or DVI port.

Twitchy

Twitchy

You mean like, take it out of the case and try it?

Nah on the back I/O where all your USB connections and that are...there should be some video connections there that would use your CPUs internal graphics instead of your video card.

Twitchy

Twitchy

Ooooh, yeah. I've been trying to use an HDMI cord and it still doesn't work.

HydrasBreath ♜

hmm yeah then you'd probably need to download some driver to get your tv to work as a monitor but you can't do that till you get everything all set up. You must have someone you know that can lend you a monitor for a day.

HydrasBreath ♜

also maybe your HDMI cable is bad? that's another possibility...an unlikely one but still a possibility.

It sounds like your PC isnt picking up your TV to me.

I think I have a REALLY old monitor somewhere, so I'm gonna look for that and try to hook it up.

StormEye

Many vid card and mobo do not support HDMI right out of the box, until you install driver or change bios setting.

Doesn't your TV have DVI or VGA input?

Most TVs with HDMI should have DVI, as the interface is pretty much the SAME except sound delivery and maximum resolution. You can also try to get DVI to HDMI cable where you use DVI on your vid card and connect HDMI to your TV.

I'm not sure about DVI or VGA, I'll check when I get back home.

I just tried the computer with a normal monitor, and nothing happened. Is there any other possible things I could try?

with HDMI? you should try with DVI or VGA (if your card even has VGA). If after that it still doesn't work something is obviously not hooked up right.

Tried VGA, still didn't work. Don't think I have DVI. What do D:

hmm does your mobo have dvi or vga connections? If it does try using those. If not maybe you don't have your video card hooked up right?

If you can't get it working still I'd say just bite the bullet and take it to a computer repair shop or someone who's experienced in PC troubleshooting/repairs and see if they can get it going. Would only set you back maybe 50-80 bucks if you took it to a shop (rough estimate).

Wait what doesnt have DVI?

You can buy a DVI adapter for like 5 bucks.

Twitchy

I have VGA, and tried it. Still didn't work. The only reason I haven't taken it to someone at this point is because there's only one place near me, and he said it'll take him almost a week since there's 6 other computers there he needs to look at. I wanna make it my absolute last priority. I'm gonna take everything apart and rebuild today I think. One last try, before I take it in.
