I know this was posted in the E3 thread but it deserves it's own special place.

Commander mode looks fucking sweet!

Lets welcome bunch of people who have no idea what they are doing, and wage vote down war, in the commander spot.

I remember commandering.

Oh god the amount of people calling me out on staying at the back of the base, doing "nothing."

Said ex-commander leading us earlier, trying to shoot people on the front, no UAVs, no orbitals, no nothing.

I've never played a battlefield that had a commander. Should be interesting to see how it changes the dynamics of battles.

>____> I imagine it screwing the team more often than not due to horrible horrible randoms.

it's crazy if you can blow up the skyscrapers lol

I just hope that you cant spot as commander this time around. Thats basically all people did as commander (if they were any good). And when they introduced spot spam block, they just learnt ways to stop spamming for a brief moment and start again.

Commander: Enemy Spotted
Commander: Enemy Spotted
Commander: Enemy Spotted
Commander: Enemy Spotted
Commander: Enemy Spotted
Commander: Enemy Spotted
Commander: Enemy Armor Spotted
Commander: Enemy Spotted

Commander: Enemy Spotted
Commander: Enemy Spotted
Commander: Enemy Spotted
...

Wouldn't the UAV scan act as a spotting tool for commanders?

StormEye

StormEye

You can manually spot owe outside UAV, and when it is charging. Or when UAV station is destroyed.

It was a common practice among pugs AND pros.

i have no idea how commander mode worked in the past as BC2 was my first BF game. I don't see DICE letting spotting be abusable though. they did a good job with it in BF3.

StormEye

StormEye

Another thing to take note is that actually good players avoided commander seat most of the time, and idiots preferred being commanders. It is only when they make disaster that they are voted down, and others are going in that pace, but its either too late or another idiot jumps into the spot.

Anyway besides my rants, the system works like how chain of command works (talking about BF2/142). Commander gives orders to squad leader, and if accepted (you could deny) using similar interface squad leaders could modify the order or give more specific command for squad mates.

Voice com also worked similar that commander talked only to squad leaders, and squad leaders had two separate keys for command talking and squad talking.

If command interface was used well, you could actually pull off large scale coordinated strike even without voice com, which was pretty cool. But it's hard to see that happen due to idiots within the team.

UAV was a fire and forget scan over a small area. The commander also had a map wide scan that highlights all enemies, but only for himself. If you were a map type commander (usually a good idea, you didn't get points for killing and stuff with weapons) you'd spot them by marking them on the minimap, then they show up for your troops.

The kick was that you didn't need the map scan to spot the enemy, you could just randomly spot over an area you think someone is, and due to the fairly sized spotting radius, you could usually get them. Zooming in on the full map could also bring you close enough to see individual movement, as there were 2 types of maps between zooms, wide (no details, just the actual map) or close (which showed textures and people from a top down perspective).

Cue the commanders trying to spot everything on the map and getting kicked off the comm channels for a bit.

Also I just noticed that C flag gets destroyed with the skyscraper. Did any of the previous Battlefield games feature that? Destroying a flag could make a HUGE difference to how a game plays out.

StormEye

StormEye

I don't think so. Maybe in a mod, but not in a proper series.

You have to remember that env destruction came in starting from BC series, which is after 2/2142. You could destroy Titan in 2142, but that is end of the game.

If they do it cool, it might be a dynamic location. Blow up the foundations and shift the flag position, while killing everyone in the building. Including any pesky campers.

But it's likely going to be an end of game thing.

The C flag icon literally fades out from both the "on screen" HUD and the minimap just after they parachute off the side. It doesn't seem to be a game ender, just a dynamic event. The tanks that get blown up by the cruise missile were chipping away at the building so it seems like it can be done any time.

I never liked being Commander

StormEye

StormEye

Me neither, except when I was able to get commander position and got a hold of my Battle Walker in BF2142, so I orbitalled and resupplied on the fly, against anything in my way. People screamed that I can't do that, but what do they know? LoL

I would just rather be infantry on the ground

And I totally agree, most good players dont want to be commander.

Its fun every once in awhile, but I would rather be doing the dirty work.

Playing commander is/was pretty easy to do

StormEye

StormEye

Well, it's challenge if you try to do usual ground pounding with commanding at same time. It's one player up vs another team, which is a huge advantage. And having one player down, especially if he is a good player, it's always a loss of valuable asset to the team.

Indeed

I just found most people were terrible at commander

Granted I haven't played commander mode in literally years.

Im glad its back though, no doubt

StormEye

StormEye

Nothing special, unless you want to get to pro level.

You have to have a/bunch-of stop watches to time vehicle spawns, And either coordinate stealing or striking it with asset, to deny enemy team in getting advantage. These vehicles have range of time spawn, so they don't spawn always on time, so you have to keep an eye on them spawning while doing regular stuff.

Also, you have to defend yourself against people who are probably better shooter than you, as you would not be in commander position if your are better at shooting.

And strikes cannot take out vehicles unless targeted correctly, you have to coordinate using your team or your given assets to put enemy vehicles into proper position or stop them to safely destroy them when needed. You probably can't get enemy commander this way, since its not a pug gaming and other team is just as smart as you are and gone into a building.

Spam spotting without getting blocked out is another skill required, and when you blocked from spamming, you have to have a good communication skill to relay enemy position through spoken language effectively enough.

pretty sure the commander isn't an actual player in BF4? How else would you be able to connect using only a tablet? i'm confused...

Commander is an actual human yes

StormEye

StormEye

I could have my tablet setup on my desk next to my screen or keyboard. Being a layer and commander at the same time. Unless you can only log into origin once and commander is not allowed to participate in combat.

Could be interesting, as I can sort of see myself commanding while going to work. LoL

Your commander needs to get off the platform, hold enemy at bay for a while.

They show a person playing as a commander in a coffee shop on a tablet. how could a tablet possibly run BF4?

Good question

Maybe a commander only tablet edition.

I watched the MP trailer again. Take a look at 5:00. Watch the soldier with the boonie hat closely. You can see he gets into a knife fight with an enemy. It's easy to see that there was more than one counter there, so it looks like knifing might turn into a battle of reaction times! Awesome!

VOIP confirmed for all platforms. Man BF4 is really starting to feel like what BF3 should have been.

Yeah it's already looking to be a much better game. I'm not as hyped as I was for BF3 but I feel like this will be a more enjoyable and better game overall.

I think commander mode might be a tablet only thing. If so, this is great for a few reasons:

- it could mean 64 players plus 2 potential commanders, taking no-one out of the actual player count as such
- the interface is perfect for it, especially for consoles (not so much pc, as the mouse would be fine for it - but the hands-on touchy feely tablet style is a great touch)
- get involved in the BF action anywhere! If your mates are playing but you can't get on console/PC, maybe you can join the game as commander and still help them out

I can totally see this being a stand alone app. It doesn't need to run BF4 - just that map interface that integrates with an online game. Start the app, search for a game that needs a commander, rock on.

Commander has already been confirmed as PC/console/tablet. It's also potentially making its way to smartphones.

MADEWITHROBOTS

MADEWITHROBOTS

Ah ok, thanks for the confirmation Ante.

Sounds like it'll take a couple players out of the 64 total count, which is a faint shame. I still kinda hope it's run as a somewhat seperate thing, but I guess it'd be hard to notice if there's still 63 others battling it out on the ground.

In any case, as far as the tablet is concerned, I think it's perhaps the best possible integration of 'second screen' tech - actually worthwhile, without resorting to gimmicky add-ons. A trend I'm happy to see continue.

Speaking of which, The Division (which might well be my game of the show) also seems to offer a similar kind of deal and it also looks well integrated there as well.

Isn't it 64 + 1 commander for PC/next gen and 24 + 2 commanders for last gen? I thought I heard that somewhere.

Nope. Each side gets 1 commander regardless of platform.

HydrasBreath ♜

Yeah I didn't see much sense having more than one commander per team.
