This is actually kinda scary

The potential this has to cause all out fuckery is not good

Yeah McCains made us feel special but now I find out they are just the worlds chip whores

I dont see the big issue here. I dont think these strikes will make the present situation on the ground any better, but I think its important for the United States to maintain credibility when setting 'red lines' against the use of WMDs. Iran will be watching closely. There are parallels to Iraq in 2003 here, but a cruise missile strike is a much smaller commitment than actually putting boots on the ground (which not even mccain or lindsey graham are advocating). There are only bad options in this situation, given how much of a mess Syria is, and the administration has been very hesitant about doing anything since day 1. But I think the time to finally do something has come. Not acting now gives Assad the green light to do whatever he wants to the defenseless people of Syria, and to oppressive regimes in the future to act similarly.

If it's the same company we're talking about it was founded in the neck of the woods I live in.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCain_Foods

apparently they provide 1/3 of the worlds french fries.

Not bad for being from butt fuck nowhere Canada.

Frostbyrn

Yeah but there has been some concern that the government might not even be using them and the rebels are faking the attacks in order to garner Western support

Im not sure what you mean here. Syria is already a clusterfuck of sectarian fighting, with both sides (there are actually multiple sides) being enemies of the United States. An oppressive regime that kills its own people, backed by Russia, Hezbollah, and Iran. On the other side is an increasingly extremist jihadist force that sees the conflict as a holy war between Sunnis and Shias, and are trying to turn Syria into the next lawless land much like Yemen. Both sides see the US as their arch enemy, but also hate each other just as much. Whatever ends up happening in Syria will be bad, with years of revenge killings surely to come, leaving a country that looks a lot like Iraq does right now.

I think the odds of this are pretty small. Every time there has been a slaughter of civilians Assad has denied it. Back in April when he used chemical weapons in a smaller strike, it was also blamed on the rebels. I think Assad was trying to ease in to his use of chemical weapons, just to keep the international community at bay, but seriously miscalculated last week.

Even if the rebels were using them, where would they have gotten them from? The Assad regime is the only answer, and the known complexes where these have been kept havent been touched by the rebels. Either way, Assad is responsible for the use of these weapons which are banned under international law, especially when used against civilians.

I just get frustrated.. I was talking to this guy in my dorm today about this - His argument boiled down to

"Oh no the government is doing something I dont really understand about a situation I dont understand in the middle east! Last time something happened in the middle east americans got killed I think! fuck the government they dont know what theyre doing!! The world is going down the drain and the Russians are coming!"

ok man.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomahawk_(missile)

A strike involving 50 missiles has been proposed.

$1.5 mil per missile x 50 = $75 mil. 220 mil tax payers = $.30 per taxpayer

I get why it all does seem unnecessary though. Honestly these strikes probably wont change much, but you have to understand the reasoning  behind them.

There really isnt. No matter what happens over there it will be a mess. Its just a matter of how bad of a mess now.

I wonder why wait till now to use the chemicals weapons on the civilians, war has been going on for years with lots of deaths already *shrug*, maybe he's getting desperate. I actually remember reading alot a few months ago of some Russian official who got in trouble for basically saying he knew Assad was screwed and his days over, that they were going to lose

http://news.yahoo.com/momentum-grows-military-action-against-syria-195655176.html

Heyman predicted a possible three-phase campaign, with the first step — the encirclement of Syria by Western military assets by air and sea — already underway.
"Phase two would be a punitive strike, taking out high-value command and control targets and communications centers," Heyman said. "That could be done easily with cruise missiles from ships and aircraft. Phase three would be a massive takedown of Syrian air defenses. That would have to be done before you could take out artillery and armor, which is the key to long-term success."

edit: god damn it why when I copy and paste something it shows up as black text >__>

They should wait and do it on Sunday. There's never anything good on TV Sunday anyway so a good bombing would spice things up.
