CALIFORNIA sheriff's officials and family members say deputies shot and killed a 13-year-old boy who was carrying a replica assault weapon.

Two Sonoma County deputies saw the boy walking with the replica weapon at about 3pm local time on Tuesday in Santa Rosa.

Lt. Dennis O'Leary says they repeatedly ordered him to drop what appeared to be a rifle before firing several rounds.

The boy fell to the ground. Deputies handcuffed him and began administering first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Lt. O'Leary says deputies also found a plastic handgun in his waistband.

The boy's father, Rodrigo Lopez, told the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa the victim was his 13-year-old son, Andy.

“I told him what I tell him every day,” he said in Spanish. “Behave yourself.”

The boy's mother, Sujey Annel Cruz Cazarez, was grief-stricken.

“Why did they kill him? Why?” she said.

The deputies have not been identified but both had been placed on administrative leave

damn...I guess what can you expect though waving a rifle around in public though.

just speaking from my experience, the spanish parents here never watch their children and they run WILD in the streets, then if anything bad ever happens they make a big fuss and cry a river, when they were the ones to blame for being shitty parents. Happened when I was younger and some kid was playing chicken on his bike with a truck and the truck was going too fast to stop I guess and the kid apparently died >_>

Yeah, I don't blame them.

If they did order him several times, the kid has no one to blame but himself. Which he cant, since hes dead lol.

I saw another article on this earlier and it showed a picture of the airsoft rifle. Didn't even have the orange cap on the end of the barrel. Tragic, but that kid was an idiot.

its a shit situation, but those orange tips are on their for a reason, and that reason is so you don't get shot at. if there isnt an orange tip how are you supposed to tell if its a firearm or an airsoft gun from far away?

As tragic as it is...this is the kinda thing that happens when you remove the orange tip and don't listen to the cop telling you to put it down.

Sorry that it happened, but, hopefully for someone it will be something to learn from.

Maybe he didnt speak English

Even so you would think a bunch of cops yelling at you and waving guns would clue you in to what was happening

Amazing that something this terrible can happen simply because someone was to stupid to do the painfully, obviously smart thing.

The whole situation is screwed up, and sadly, we'll never know all of the facts. The question is though, why did the police stop him in the first place, how did they know about him? Terry stops if I recall are illegal, unless the officer has reasonable cause to believe a crime is about to or has already happened.

Mind you, I'm not shunning the officers, there is a lot of "if" statements that will likely never be answered here. I'm curious as to what will be coming out of this, we simply don't have enough information to really ascertain what went down between the kid and the officers.

from a distance especially without the orange tip on it looks just like a real one, in Cali they already have that assault weapons ban and all that crap anyway, so I don't know WHAT the fuck the kid was thinking walking down a street in Cali with even a toy AK

As someone who owns dozens of airsoft guns and used to attend tournaments on a regular basis, this kid was stupid.
