I am not going to  play infantry in Jet maps.

Then how is it a JDAM if it doesn't lock on?

because video games. i don't know.

But. But if it doesn't lock on, why call it a JDAM? Why not "dummy bomb"?

http://science.howstuffworks.com/smart-bomb2.htm

The preeminent smart-bomb technology of the day is Boeing'sJDAM, which stands for Joint Direct Attack Munition. The basic idea behind the JDAM program is to outfit existing "dumb" bombs with sophisticated rear guidance sections. The U.S. Air Force is currently using JDAM with the 2,000-pound (907-kg) BLU-109 orMK-84 warhead or the 1,000-pound (454-kg) BLU-110 or MK-83warhead.
The JDAM "tail kit" includes adjustable tail fins, a control computer, an inertial guidance system and aGPS receiver. Both the GPS receiver and the inertial guidance system allow the bomb to locate itself in space. The GPS receiver figures out its position by interpreting GPS satellite signals (see How GPS Receivers Work), while the inertial guidance system monitors the bomb's movements, tracking its path from its launch position.
Before dropping the bomb, the aircraft uses its own GPS receiver to pinpoint particular targets on the ground. Just before releasing the bomb, the aircraft's computer feeds the bomb's computer its current position and the GPS coordinates of the target.

In the air, the JDAM's GPS receiver processes signals from GPS satellites to keep track of its own position. As with other smart bombs, the control system adjusts the flight fins to "steer" the bomb in the right direction. According to the U.S. Air Force, the system is accurate to within 40 feet (13 meters). When everything goes exactly right, the bombs generally hit within a few feet of their targets.
This system works fine even in bad weather, because the JDAM gets all its information fromsatellite signals, which aren't blocked by cloud cover or obstacles. The bomb doesn't have to see anything at all to find its way to the target. And at around $20,000 per tail kit (which can be added to an existing warhead), it's much more economical than $120,000+ laser-guided bombs.

The JDAM played a major role in the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, and it will certainly play a significant role in any U.S. bombing campaigns in the near future. While the newest smart bombs aren't 100 percent accurate, they are such an improvement over their predecessors that they're quickly taking over the U.S. arsenal.

JDAMs, don't. Preorder cancelled

because, then everyone would scream "dirty Sanchez inbound" into their mics.

well, if the US Govt hadnt have gone into shutdown, maybe they would have got around to sticking some smarts into their JDAMs. DICE is just being authentic, is all.

Well I can kind of see why they did it. I mean if they could lock on as well there wouldn't be much point in taking the laser guided missile. It would probably be OP.

I doubt I'll use em much like in bf3, unless they have more than 2 per side, they don't effect the match much at all, from what I played on the pc and the entire time on the xbox, jets don't win matches. Tanks can, and even choppers, but not jets.

Now that they have bombs though that could change...They can easily rain death on groups of infantry or vehicles.

But yeah I probably won't mess with them too much. I'm not really a good pilot.

You're right Jr. Jets don't win matches. In fact having your team uselessly fly around in jets is more likely to cost you a match. Especially if the other team is smart enough to use them as transport, bail and cap flags quickly.

Hydra is right though... maybe they won't be useless this time.

Yeah hard to say. And it'll be interesting to see if they mix jet types in a single map because I'm guessing that only the more AG type jets (like the A10) will get bombs.

Dumb fire bombs win matches.

Unless they completely remove kills costing tickets, bombs in the hands of decent players will become nightmare to everyone AND win the match.

This is very cool... but seriously why the fuck name it a JDAM?

StormEye

StormEye

At least it drops on a precise location displayed on minimap.

Real dumb bombs have inherent inaccuracy.

Though, BF series don't really simulate that.

Now, it makes some sense in the consistency of the drop location.

Metalzoic

Metalzoic

So what is the one it shows locking on in the videos? A completely different bomb/missile thingy?

StormEye

StormEye

There is a laser guided version you can choose to use instead.

But I don't think its going to be any efficient, unless enemy team has massive armor force AND there are good number of recon players all targeting them for you.

Its better to reduce number of enemy infantry in ground to let armor forces have better time dealing with other threats, thus being able to have better holding in ground. Ground armor battle seems to be more of bitch slapping each other (especially with increased frontal armor), and having enemy infantry chewing away health (even if it is miniscule) will prove to be a disaster.

Metalzoic

Metalzoic

Hmmm.
I watched a vid where the guy would go to a different targeting screen that looked down at the ground coming up zoomed in, move the reticle over the vehicle, it would lock and he would fire and it would hit.

I think that's TV missile. Not the same as the one you get for choppers.

Ok I guess they call it laser guided missile but I'm sure its a Maverick TV guided missile.

Metalzoic

Metalzoic

Yeah, it looked like the TV missle screen, but it didn't seem like he had to drive it.

Yeah it works by locking on but you have to hold the lock. You can get the one you drive as a later unlock too.

StormEye

StormEye

TV missile back in BF2 was devastating in the right hands.

You can manoeuvre it through jungle of buildings and hit enemy dead on.

That's the guided missile you get from the start.

Attack jets are pretty good in conquest, they can take out ground vehicles well but can be shot down by the fighter jet.

Maybe it's been crap chopper pilots but I haven't seen any good ones yet, they instantly get taken out by the jets....just imagine when people start getting stingers lol

I just unlocked the stingers earlier. Haven't tried them yet. I don't usually play AA engineer.
