First, you have to understand that metal =/= hardcore and metal =/= screamo.

Now, after that, depends on what you're looking for.

Heavy metal?
Power metal?
Death?
Thrash?
Black?
Folk?
Symphonic?
etc.

If you have no clue as to what those are, I suggest that you first take a look at classic metal like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Jag Panzer, Twisted Sister, Judas Priest, Armored Saint, etc. and some power like Helloween, Blind Guardian (a bit folky sometimes), Avantasia, Aina, Iced Earth, Bloodbound, Rhapsody, Drakkar, etc.

If you want to check heavier stuff, there's always thrash, death and black. Some of Bathory's albums (the first 4), Slayer, Tartaros, Emperor, Necrophobic, etc.

Or stuff that's in between, not too heavy as the ones above, but not as soft as the ones I first mentioned. Some of them: Stormlord, Graveworm, Summoning, Galadriel, etc.

Or the folk-viking things like some of Bathory's albums, Turisas, Lumsk, Black Messiah, Cruachan, Ensiferum, Equilibrium, Elexorien, Eluveitie, etc.

Or some others that I'm randomly coming up with: Arcana, Estatic Fear, Ex Deo, Gods Tower, Grand Magus, Haggard, Heavenly, King Diamond, Luca Turilli, Lux Occulta, Malnatt, Meduza, Manowar, Pyramaze, Rainbow, Salamandra, Sinergy, Therion, Tuatha de Dannan, Valkyria, Ayreon.

You should have enough to take a look at, unless you're more interested in something else. In the case you actually want stuff like nu, hardcore, screamo, whatever, I can't help you there. Not my thing.

To be honest, Ill listen to anything. Like Ill go straight from Jazz to Devil Wears Prada or Underoath. But just anything heavier will do; ive been getting sick of listening to straight "alternative" all day.
Ill check out those^ first, they sound sweet. Its also a matter of what I can afford right now too, so unless someone I know has it, Im probably not going to get much right now.

Two albums I really like.

Karlahan's A Portrait of Life is a Symphonic Death Metal EP that's pretty cool, and it's free. http://www.myspace.com/karlahan/blog/512629698

The Butcher's Ballroom by the Diablo Swing Orchestra is operatic jazz metal. If that's not awesome enough, it too is free. http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/49216

Also, this thread is already win.

Just because something is heavy doesnt make it metal. Primus a very good prog rock band. But personally I enjoy Claypools solo stuff more.

Eh I've seen them being labeled as funk metal and alternative metal on several different places not sure why you're counting them out of the genre.

And yes Claypool's solo stuff is amazing.

Megadeth's best albums are Rust in Peace, Peace Sells, and So Far So Good So What IMO. Youthanasia and albums around that time period are ok but they're really not the real Megadeth most fans think of when they think Megadeth.

Metallica has some great albums, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are amazing. Kill Em All is really good too. If you can't get enough of Metallica, you can explore And Justice For All. If you really really like them go ahead and get Black Album and Death Magnetic, but pretty much avoid everything else they're made like a plague.

Iron Maiden is pretty good too. Check out 2 Minutes to Midnight, Hallowed be Thy Name, and Aces High (songs).

Megadeth!!!! \m/ -_-\m/

I grew up with alot of old school stuff: Black Sabbath is a very good band to start.

Generally I listen to:
Killswitch Engage
All That Remains
Megadeth
Metallica
Trivium
SlipKnot (Stone Sour is good too, but they are a mix of some other stuff)

Megadeth's Rust in Peace is a must.

There's no real difference. Underground is just... not very known, that's it. Sometimes people literally go like "zomgs they are kinda popular now, they suck balls!". I've heard my fair share of things, both known and underground and the biggest difference you can find is recording quality.

Some bands do crash and burn once they become popular, I must admit. Trying to make their music more "accesible". Or their creativity just burns outs.

BTW, I didn't specify albums for any of the bands I named, but I'm too lazy for it now Razz

I hate when I hear people call stuff like slipknot or other genres like death metal heavy metal. Heavy metal is reserved for the classics like deep purple and zeppelin and judas priest, which aren't really considered metal anymore, but really pioneered the genre. Everything else by now is a sub genre.

Like what? Unless we have different concepts, I can't see what you mean other than what I stated.

Mainstream = Iron Maiden, Slayer, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Mayhem, etc. Everyone knows about them.

Underground = Vlad Tepes, Odroerir, Barksten, Hordak, etc. Not particularly known or popular.

Ducksaws wrote:judas priest, which aren't really considered metal anymore

Im talking about the sound, and funding principles of the music. The mainstream crowd has very different reasons for making said music than the Underground. This is where money comes in and sacrificng your integrity to appeal to a broader audience. This is what Im getting at.

Folk metal isn't underground, at least not in the way Symbolic sees and lives it.

Nor in the way I do.

Underground for me also means the actual music, not just whether or not a band is known or not.

Unknown bands can still make mainstream music.

46Metal music suggestions? Empty Re: Metal music suggestions? 2011-04-08, 08:25

Exactly. I dont mean underground simply as unknown. Thats not it at all. You cant just wake one day and decide to be metal, you either are, or you arent. And the underground is home the mass majority of these musicians and bands in this genre.

I remember getting into some decent discussions with Sym and Greg about the varying genres in metal, and out personal tastes. Personlly, I have huge amount of respect for the knowledge both Sym and Greg have in this area, and while I disagree with them on what appeals to me I definitely hold their opinion in high regard.

It all comes down to what you like. I like some melody in my music, in both what I listen to and play, and my favorite bands reflect that. Don't worry about what the genre is or if it's underground or mainstream, it's all about the individual likes.
