He's either requesting a remix or semi-trollin'.

I'm not quite sure which one I want it to be.

Are there many old-school/traditional heavy metal fans here? I could post up some songs that I wrote that my band plays. I have a heavy Iron Maiden and Iced Earth influence mixed with other thrash and progressive influences so if there are people here who dig that kind of stuff you'd probably like my tunes.

I am actually working on some My Little Pony-step as we speak. As filthy as I can possibly make it.

I'm still trying to figure out how to make dubstep.

I think it most likely has to do with altering the LFO, but the synthesizer I use doesn't apply the changes until I hit a new key most of the time. It was working for me one time but I still couldn't get the right sound to it or a low enough frequency.

And scrittah I'm liking your ambient track.

It's really all dependent on how you want to go about it. You can draw in the curves for your automation yourself or record from a MIDI interface, if you want a more organic, humanized sound, or you can do what it looks like you're trying, and having an LFO change the filter cutoff. If you're taking that route, some advice:

  1. Use external filters. Especially if you have lots of effects laden on top of your synth to dirty it up, you want to have your filter be the last thing in your FX chain (bar maybe some reverb or compression). This also solves the problem of not having enough control over your LFO (what are you using for a DAW, by the way?).
  2. If you're having problems with not enough lower frequency coming through, you have a simple sub bass (just a sine wave very low) following along with your mid-range bass, and processed without the distortion and effects on your mid-range. This gives it that nice, clean boom underneath everything.
  3. Use parallel processing. I'm not sure what DAW you have, so I don't really know what your options are, but it's typically better to have multiple, parrallel chains of effects than having them all stacked on top of each other. This way, you have more control over your sound, and it's easier to avoid losing the definition in your original sound.
Sorry if that's patronizing at all; I'm not really sure where you're at on this. If you already know all of that, then my apologies.

And thanks Very Happy

By external filters and parallel processing do you mean add filters and effects on top of those available with my synthesizer?

All I'm using right now as a DAW is Ardour, which I don't think does anything fancy. I'm basically reliant on ZynAddSubFX for all my effects.

I've also fooled around with sub-synths a bit. If you listen to my most recent song with a good pair of headphones or with good subs you'll hear that it has one rumbling in the background, I can't hear it at all on my laptop speakers though. And sometimes when I mess with the sub synth's frequency envelopes and what not it gets a really good rumble but it also glitches and cuts out on one ear or both and I'm not sure why.

Well that's odd, to say the least. I'm not familiar with Ardour at all, so I can't really help you there. :/

I think it sounds pretty good; once again, it sounds much like C418's style of music. Smile
