Not heavy though.

Necrophagist is most definitely heavy. Maybe not compared to some of the grind you listen to, but they have their brutal moments. Ive seem em live 5 times, and my jaw was on the floor every time. Coming from guitar player(currently on hiatus to being run over by a drunk-o) they are absolutely amazing. They play alot of stupidly fast thrash riffs, so that may be where your not hearing the heaviness.

To be honest, while we are both huge metal heads obviously who love the brutal shit. Our taste's are slightly different. Im into the technical shit, which you probably have realized. Being a lead player, its what I strive for in my music. Also Im a huge fan of progressive music, which explains my love of such bands as meshuggah and Gojira. And you've heard my song, its totally progressive.

You on the other hand from my perspective are VERY similar to my bands video guy jeremy. I know all about the grind culture, as Im around it almost daily. I know you also appreciate and love other styles of metal, but grind lovers are their own breed IMO. Dont get me wrong, you know I love me some grind. But Grind is ALL about that brutal heaviness, and insane rythems. Which has its place. I also personally am not a huge fan of Grind style vocals. Myself also being a huge thrash fan, enjoy a variety of vocal types in my metal. The only thing I cant stand however, are bands who fucking squeal 90% of the time. Although I do love me some Devourment.

Does that make any sense? Or am I just to stoned?

Not saying Necrophagist isn't great, they just leave me more with the "holy shit, what are they playing" reaction, than the "that is heavy as a fucking monolith" one. Still brutal stuff though.

Even as far as brutal death metal goes, I prefer the stuff that isn't over the top technical. I love stuff like Suffocation for example. Too many arpeggios and and stuff like that just seems flattulence to me. I prefer jazz and/or some progressive for over the top "fret masturbation".

Yea understand the concept of guitar masturbation. I do it all the time jamming haha. But when it comes to writing a song, it comes from a totally different perspective. I love technical music, but it has to be within the artist's ability. Guitar masturbation to me is bands like god damn shitty Dragon Force. Those guys really aren't that great of guitar players. They are so over rated musically its a joke. They rely on effects and pentatonic scales to create thier music. And the sole purpose of the song is to get to the crappy wankery. That is what I consider guitar masturbation, and bands are like that in every genre. But when it fits within the structure of a song, that is the sign of a great musician. And I love that shit.

A good example imo of a band going too far into masturbator territory is Origin and Decrepit Birth. The first two Origin and first Decrepit Birth are awesome. After wards it's just too much for me.
