well thank fuck for that.

people seem to totally underestimate how much potential there is in stem cells.

Thank God. Stem cell research could produce some amazing results; pisses me off that people are so against it sometimes.

Finally the feud is over. This research can and has made major medical breakthroughs.

Why did people not want this?

Religious fanatics saying that SCR was against God and immoral. I just have to say this. If you are so much against medicine changing "God's" will. Why are you taking vaccines/medicine that stops what "God" had planned for you?

Grey took the words right out of my mouth.

Ah, makes sense.(The fact that religious fanatics were the reason)

Why can't they comprehend(sp?) that not everybody believes in the same things as they do and stop trying to make it seem that their views are the only ones right? Do you think that a Buddhist dude gives a shit if some Catholics are protesting outside an abortion clinic saying abortion is wrong because their god says so?

If that makes any sense.

No religion debate. Please. PLEASE.

Not a Religion debate, a Religious fanatics debate. Totally different.

Everybody hates them.

Yes religious fanatics are bad, but somewhere along the line someone's going to misconstrue a comment and then it's all downhill.

Let's instead talk about how awesome it is that we'll be able to make crucial medical breakthroughs in the US now.

Khfan60

True enough.

So what exactly can we do now with stem cell research?

Ante

Ante

A lot.

Good to see that this was approved. If it were up to the people against this, we would still be in the middle ages.

Too bad we don't have any money for it now...

Guys, they're not mad because it would change God's will. I know everybody loves to make Catholics/Christians sound insane, but that makes them sound completely ridiculous. It's pretty much for the same reason as to why people are opposed to abortion, because some stem cell research involves taking the stem cells from a fertilized egg. Since Catholics/Christians believe life starts at conception, it is equivalent to murder in some people's eyes. They also think that stem cells that aren't from embryos could be more useful. It's not that they're anti-stem cells, just anti-embryonic stem cells. Just clearing that up.

I was sure that more people disliked it for the same reason they disliked abortion, religious or not. I personally say that the sacrifice of a fetus is definitely worth it, considering the fact that you can save many people with the research from it, and it hasn't even developed into a "true", sentient being yet. Just my stance though.

I'm not debating, just clearing up the reasons religious people are opposed to it because what Grey said was wrong. And I don't know how you could not expect some kind of religious debate about stem cell research

Ante

Ante

I didn't expect a religious debate about this because this isn't a debate thread, it's a thread to celebrate humanity making small steps towards a brighter future. Also because it's in the forum rules.

How and where do they get the fetus from, however? They will probably establish some strict regulations with that.

Wacco

Yea, I'm sure there would be strict regulations. And stem cells don't only come from embryos, they can come from adults too.

Kitsune

Kitsune

Yeah, but they always use the whole fetus/embryo bullshit to win, because it's "murder" or something. That's the tactic always see used against it, and I'm also sure that stem-cells come from adults too, but I think there are more before you are born and such. It wouldn't really be that hard to farm embryos, or have adults somehow donate them, and such for stem cells, so I don't really see the big problem with it.

yeah I hate that the nutjobs have to ruin it for everybody, that post was very true about why do they think THEY'RE views apply for everybody?

I guess a debate wouldn't do anything, never has changed anybody's views really. Most people I've seen here are atheists anyway so it's all good lol.

Good news,it saddened me that old hillbilly George Bush kept denying stem cell research.I don't care much for Obama at all,but it had a better chance of it passing with him in office than without.

I don't have a problem with democrats at all really besides gun control...if it wasn't for that I'd be happy.I don't care if they take the money from the rich lol honestly since I'm dirt poor anyway XD

Wacco

This is so hard for me not to get into an argument now that politics are involved too....damn you forum rules.

I think it might actually be a good idea to lock this. No real good can come of it, so if a mod sees this and feels like it, go ahead.

Well the US has one of the greatest myths ever developed

Separation of Church and State Very Happy

Also if we didnt Experiment on innocent children we wouldnt have Spartan 2's and the covenant would have wiped us out years ago

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but I believe they can get stem cells from discarded placenta's and umbilical cords.I dont think fetus's are necessary.I really hope though this is the cure alot of scientist think it is.

yeah they don't want us to kill our unborn so they can grow up and fight our wars

Oh my god. Stop. Just stop. Don't. Both sides of this 'argument' (*whine* "But it isn't an argument!") need to just stop.

This wasn't supposed to be a thread to kick sand in people's eyes who have different views than you.

Lock this, please. PLEASE.

JrTapia1991

it's from a Manson song but I agree Razz

awesome cred to you Frost. It's true there's supposed to be separation but hardly ever is.

I hope we get to cure alot of stuff with stem cells.

I was reading in Discovery Science the other morning this guy is trying to find out the secret to letting us live to 150.Called Teleperes or something like that...the ends of the chromosomes. After so many years when you're old they get smaller each time they divide, then can't anymore, and that's what causes death.

I read about some herbal drink a couple years ago having to do with the mitocondria that would increase our life span by 5 years.
