Well i've been having a bit of an MMO bug again because everything else doesn't seem to hold my attention that long so i've been considering building my own PC. I have the spare cash so why not? Honestly the stuff i play won't be too demanding but i wouldn't mind the ability to play recent releases and stuff that's a few years old but it doesn't nessciarly have to be all maxed out.

I was thinking of clearing out a nice little section in my room to put a desk/chair/comp

Just wondering what you guys think of this as a first PC build.

Looks like a good build

What MMO's are you thinking of playing?

I dont really play them, but every once in awhile one comes along that I like( GW2)

chunckylover53

I am definitely going to try wow again with my good friend. May try guild wars 2 if that fails to hold my attention but i disliked the first, maybe even planet side since people seem to really like it.

I'll probably get back into Starcraft, never got the chance to even try SC2 so i am not sure how that is over brood war (shame on me) and warcraft 3.

But yea that build will wreck shit.

HDD is small for me personally haha

CPU is really good

Gpu is really good

etc

Check ecollegePC.com too. They might have different prices.

That SSD is better than mine...

For balance purpose, your SSD is overkill compared to other components. Though, at least you won't have loading time issues, or if you have you can blame it on the program.

chunckylover53

I figured i'd go for a decent sized SSD because i won't be using that much space but i didn't exactly want to cheap out on it.

StormEye

StormEye

256 actually will get filled up rather quick, if that is our main drive for games.

I only have 5 games installed (though two of them are responsible for MASSIVE chunk of the space) and I only have 98gb left.

Btw any reason for ASRock motherboard?

Although, I have not looked for them or used them in recent years, they had a reputation for faulty motherboards.

chunckylover53

A friend has told me good things about it but i will look more into it, nothing is set in stone yet. Same as the case i am open for suggestions as this will be my first build i always welcome advice.

StormEye

StormEye

ASRock used to be a subsidiary company of ASUS. They used to produce bunch of experimental products or DIRT CHEAP motherboards that could potentially spoil ASUS's reputation but could gather useful information and gain market share among low level users.

But maybe now its different.

I heard a bunch of dead on arrival reviews for that motherboard, but the asrock extreme 4 I'm getting seems a bit more decent at least. Cheapest board I could find that had the features I wanted.

thought about a gigabyte,but.....reading the reviews apparently they outsourced their Taiwan factory to someplace in china and the quality has gone down.

>___> really been thinking of another board,the asrock extreme4 1155 is like...$234.

any recommendations in that price range? Razz

pc looks good, not sure if it matters to you,but make sure the case has the motherboard pins for the fans instead of molex or the fans will be at 100% all the time.Adapters are cheap though like 2 bucks each

I'll switch to that, has a lot of good reviews and is a little cheaper, maybe that's what my friend meant since the only differance is a 3 and 4.

nice case though,I haven't seen many in that price range that have the fan controller built in,nice feature.Although I really want one with LED fan lights already on it..ha. They're like 6.99 online

Most higher end motherboard these days offer fan controller you can set once you boot up. You can even set them to work at certain power at certain temperature. No need for case fan controller, unless you feel analogue for some reason.

Cool

Yeah i won't be putting my $1000+ piece of machinery on a cheap coffee table. That's what i did with this PC but only have a desk now because my sister gave it to me when she moved out.

I just have a lot of money saved up and i just feel like spending a good amount of it...

Home plug you can get it now, just to bring your internet connection to your room.

Get a wireless router for your room to use a wired connection for your future PC or consoles, and you can have full strength wireless connection in your room for your mobile devices.

I'm using Aztec HomePlug HL110EP(A), but it does not seem to be listed in newegg. Its just for reference, just in case you do not know what home plug is to begin with.

My home's situation is a little different that my room is the main source of internet connection, and other parts of home are connected with home plug, and additional routers. Full strength wireless connection and wired connection in all rooms. Well, except bathroom, where it only has wireless connection. LoL

My room is far from the router, not even the 25ft ethernet cable will fit. So I play xbox via bridge connection using my laptop's wifi lol.

Don't buy the OS online. You're overpaying by about 30$ compared to retail merchants. I know Best Buy sells it for 69.99, pretty sure other places are too.

The pro version btw.

And smart choice. It's really nice.

I was going to ask what's the best 128gb SSD as well,or if it would be better to just wait until the price on the size of GB goes down. I'm just using mine for gaming.

I saw some 120-128gb SSD's for sale around black friday, but I didn't want to get it and it be a crap brand,I heard quite a few SSDs have had reliability issues, but Samsung is supposed to be pretty good,I think I read the M4 SSD is one of the better ones

This is what the final build will look like i suppose.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qQgI

Added a 2TB drive just incase for other stuff or games i am not playing at the moment.

I've been told that i should opt for a lower PSU and get a modular, was told i don't need higher than a 550W even if i were to overclock.

One more question.. Should i go for windows 7 or 8? I keep seeing different opinions but it seems like the safe bet is 7, don't know if any of you guys can shed some more light on this.

I went with Windows 7.You can always upgrade later to windows 8 when they work out the problems with service pack 1 or something.

Gil, I'll go on record as saying that W8 is very good. It has a few bugs sometimes (I really can't isolate a specific reason though, and nothing related to gaming as far as I can tell). It has much faster load times, it runs really really well, and overall it's a good system. I'm glad I got it, it works excellently.

The downside is that the metro UI takes a while to get used to. It's very customizable so once you get a handle on it, it can be a major benefit, but it does take a bunch of experimentation and work to understand.

All in all, I'd say go for 8. The speed is worth it. As an example, my PC used to take a minute to a minute and a half to boot up to the login screen. Now it's rare for it to go over 20 seconds, usually around 10 to fifteen though.

Honestly, my desk is just a think piece of wood on legs, screwed to the wall.

For the most part, anything will do really. Depends on personal preference. Though be wary of IKEA, as I've had a bunch of their stuff break over time.

And thinking about it, office max sells really nice desks, might wanna look there. But it's pricey.

Ok, now this should be my last question. I can get the same case except the full tower version for only $20 more. I doubt i'd need all that extra space but do you think it's worth investing for just the extra room/better air flow?

More room to build in(I have big hands) and much better airflow

I'd recommend the cooler master haf xm mid tower case,it's huge, can hold like an 18inch graphics card, and it's pretty much silent.I don't think you could really go wring with any cooler master or corsair case,or some rosewill are decent or even some antec cases.I wanted the antec illusion but it was sold out,and it didn't look like it could hold a very big graphics card so I just decided on the cooler master...thing is a tank lol

So the more i learn the more questions i come across.. I can get the base EVGA GTX 660 TI 2gb for $300

or i can get the 3GB FTW edition for $350. Is there a big difference? I have no problems spending an extra $50 to get the higher end version.

EDIT: See some for 320-350

My 660ti is a 3gb model. with a bit of overclocking you can equal and in some cases exceed the performance of a stock 670.
