Is it possible to use the headphones on a headset to hear the in game audio? Does the headset itself have to have that as a feature to use the headset as a set of headphones for the audio?

BTW I found out why the mic wasn't working. It was muted in the console settings.

You can buy headsets that have Audio jacks that you can plug into from your console...though only if your not using an HDMI cable.

I'm not sure about getting game sounds out of it.

Another option is hooking it up to a surround or stereo system, then using the stereo as a middleman to get audio through headphones...

It's possible. You need to get a jack that will combine the red and white audio cables (the VGA cable for the 360 comes with one. You can probably get one at Fry's or Radio Shack, though). This will leave you with one jack. Then, you get a headphone splitter. You plug the audio into one side, and your headphones into another. Bam.

Too complicated. I work at Fry's, but I just want something more direct.

You don't have too many simple options, unless your audio source has a headphone jack.
