So I feel after reading a lot of the music forums on here that I have been too focused on mainstream music. I would love if you guys could recommend me some great music that is not mainstream.

It would help if you were a little more specific. I can recommend you some artists anywhere from bluegrass to dubstep to rock.

Rock music is one of my favorites.

Hm, I'd say "OK Computer" by Radiohead is an album any rock fan should have(there's also a very good reggae version called Radiodread if you're interested).

Also "In the Court of The Crimson King" by King Crimson is another essential.

Only other one I can think of is DSOTM but you have that. If you like Pink Floyd though I'd highly suggest venturing into "Animals" next.

2. Any of those "Best of the Doors" albums, the Doors>Pink Floyd.
3. Temple of the Dog-Temple of the Dog
4. OK Computer-Radiohead (Amazing album)
5. Post-Nothing - Japandroids

I wouldn''t say those are the most essential albums ever, because I don't believe in most essential. I could NEVER limit myself to 3 albums. That's torture. But those 5 are great albums. I guess I'll give some examples:
