Picked up dragon age 2 this morning and I thought I'd tell people what I thought about it so far due to the massive change in combat. Well the first bit of good news is after a little while when you get new spells and abilities the spamming a doesn't happen all that often I found myself generally switching to a character using an ability/spell and repeating.
Another change that if you played the demo or watched trailers you'd know is the change in art style. I'm not horribly against this some models got better some got worse, although I think they should have stuck with it since they already had the atmosphere set from orgins. The two biggest I've noticed so far are the darkspawn and the elves. The darkspawn I think look terrible in orgins they where frightening and had a intimidating aura around them in da2 I don't know what went wrong it just looks like they picked up all the failed generic fantasy cannon fodder and crammed them into one race. The elves on the other hand look much better in orgins they where short humans with pointed ears in da2 there's absolutely no question they are a whole different race.
As far as the story goes it's from bioware which generally means it's good. I've only put a few hours into the game so I can't comment to much but I am enjoying it so far. It's pretty cool to see things from a refugees point of view compared to a big bad ass warden.
The final unrelated point is gore in this game. Don't get me wrong I'm not against gore or anything there was a lot of it in orgins but in da2 it feels like they just threw it in just for the hell of it. Like a 12 year old cursing because he thinks it's cool and doesn't understand the meaning of the words yet. For example in orgins there were times when killing an enemy with the normal auto-attack you would do a fatality/execution move, be-head an enemy impale him on your sword something cool and rewarding with some nice flashy animations to go along with it. I haven't noticed this in da2 yet but what I have noticed is enemies exploding when you hit them with certain abilites would be acceptable from a spell or something but hitting someone with a sword or mace and having their whole torso explode really takes away from the feel of the game.
Anyway I'm tired of typing so I'll leave it at that. So far so good if you're an rpg fan it's at least worth a rent.
