From the last decade. So sad.

http://www.kcra.com/slideshow/education/27604749/detail.html

I can understand that maybe some of these should be in an adult section versus a kids or young adults section, but banning books is just silly.

One that caught my attention was The Giver. Mainly because I know it's in the YA section, I know I've read it, and I don't remember anything sexual.

When places blacklist books, it pisses me off so much. I mean, I can see not allowing classes to teach what comes out of the books for literature, but if the student wants to go down to the damn school library and get it, why not? It burns me up even more that a lot of those books are even blacklisted in highschools, but they have books about teenage parenting and sex all over the place, and most the students swear non-stop anyways, and anything in the books probably isn't anything they haven't seen before.

The list just makes me laugh, especially because I go to a Catholic school and like 10 of those are required reading. Makes me respect my school for being a liberal Catholic school really.

Good for your school Wacco!

Catcher in the Rye was required reading in my highschool. So was Of Mice and Men.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower book is actually really good and I just recently read it. I couldn't put it down.

I used to have Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark when I was in grade school. And I bought it from the school.

Actually, I've read quite a few of those books, and am now tempted to go read them all. Buwahahahahahaha. So there. lol

The Catcher in the Rye is STILL blacklisted. It's been 60 fucking years, there's nothing wrong with it.

I didn't go through the whole thing, is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn still there too?

Was that a completion of creepy stories? My school library in 3rd grade had something like that and it gave me nightmares. >_>

Yes. And A Handmaiden's Tale, which while had some adult situations, was not "sexually explicit" nor is it in the YA section. It's in the adult. I know, I got it from the library myself. From the adult section.

So is, funnily enough, Fahrenheit 451, and Julie of the Wolves which I read and loved when I was a kid - apparently has sex in it that I don't remember.

Seriously? I think it's all made up. Or someone is so stuck of some little piece of sexualness in a book, it's all they take away from it.

Yes, it's just a collected of scary stories.

I guess someone has something against Goosebumps to because it "promotes harmful thoughts and behavior and erodes respect for people and property". Um. OK then.

Ok, something else I noticed. Most of these are label under Deschutes Public Library (look at the upper right corner of the slide show).

They have banned the Gossip Girl books, apparently, but not the DVDS. I just looked on their website.

ADDED ON: #31: "References to masturbation"

I'm actually glad they banned this book. I hate it. It is such a bad book to read. When I had to read it for school, I failed that Quarter because the damn book was terrible. I couldn't even get into it. And I usually give things a chance.

Some of these are ridiculous. Just plain ridiculous. Bridge to Terabithia? To Kill a Mockingbird? Captain Underpants? Thats just silly. Im sorry if a book offends you or shows you life isn't great and wonderful. And catcher in the rye was pretty good.

Yeah I read quite a few of these in high school. Never read A Catcher in the Rye though.

LOL at Fahrenheit 451 getting banned. Kind of proving the author's point there...

I liked Holden man. I feel like he was a relatable dude, or at least for me. When I read the book, I was still feeling that teen angst, everybody's a phony thing. I dunno, I liked it.

I see what you mean, but he did order a prostitute and told her he just wanted to talk...
