Since Cram pointed out that the last topic wasn't so much moral debate as assigned value (thanks for that), I thought we'd take a crack at a different idea. Now, this one is a lot more controversial and less hypothetical, so please keep it civil and don't insult eachother.

Should gay marriage be allowed in full?

personally, I'm all for. I have no problem with homosexual marriage.

I have no problem with gays marriage since its not really hurting anyone or changing my life drastically.I just wish other religions would be more accepting since it teaches in the bible(not sure in all religious text books) to be tolerate of other peoples religion and race(which should imply sexual orientation) . Also the stigma it puts on that gay that wants to marry since his religion won't tolerate which means his/her family won't accept him either.

Yes and no

Marriage is a religious Ceremony so its up to the religions if they want it to happen or not

But in my country we have Civil unions which give the same legal rights as marriage and all that stuff

the bible doesn't exactly teach tolerance...maybe the new testament or some revised edition but the old testament doled out some pretty harsh punishments like advocating publicly stoning a woman if she isn't a virgin when she gets married and things like that. There are things in there about men not being allowed to shave their beards or have long hair. But that's a whole other can of worms.

As for me I'm all for gay marriage...they have just as much right to be as miserable as everyone else Razz. But in all seriousness I think everyone has the fundamental right to happiness and if that involves marriage then so be it. No one should be able to stand in the way of your happiness (within reason).

I think generally people who aren't particularly religious or who are but are also gay will be for it while the more religiously inclined will be against it.

Basically unless you have a vested interest in the matter then there's not much to oppose.

well frost was playing devils advocate a bit but yeah this seems like a generational issue due to "old world" thinking and most younger people don't have a problem with it unless they were taught homophobia or are particularly devout to a religion that opposes gays.

Eh, I kind of resent how people instantly assume people who are religious are closed-minded. I'm Catholic, but I don't have any problem with gay marriage. I hate when people started bashing religious people and assume they are all idiots (not saying you are, your post just reminded me of a trend that I have noticed on the internet in general).

Wacco, I don't think anyone is assuming that. To be honest, I share the view Hydra seems to be expressing. Most off the anti-gay-marriage rhetoric I've heard came from hardcore religious people. I don't think he's implying causation, just a correlation.

that's not what I was trying to imply. I'm not trying to step on any toes here. I was simply getting at the fact that religious people are more likely to be against it because marriage (not talking civil union or a civil service but all out traditional marriage ceremony) is intrinsically tied to religion and religious people have a more vested interest in gay marriage and therefore would be more likely to be opposed to it.

It's like Pariah said I'm talking correlation not causation. I don't think religion automatically makes anyone a biggot or homophobe or close minded.

In fact it could be argued that religious people are more open minded than atheists since they are open to the possibility of a higher power and take it simply on faith.

ok here I have to stand up for my own people. In my experience, the ratio of "religious person who is tolerant and accepting" to "asshole masking their personal prejudices under religion" is pretty damn tiny. I'm not saying that religion is bad, not in the least. Many religious people I know are nice. But there are too many people who use it as an excuse, and deny any fundamental precepts to it. Personally, I try to stay openminded to anything thats new to me, and I think a lot of people do that just on their nature, not based off of religion

I definitely know some religious people who fall in the asshole category but I was trying to be objective and look at things in a different light. I wasn't implying that all religious people are more open minded than other people simply because they believe. I was getting at the fact that to be an atheist or a non religious person is to be close minded to the possibility of god like beings/energy/what have you and that people who are religious or spiritual are more open minded in this one area...other areas? maybe they are maybe they aren't.

Honestly it all comes down to human nature. Think of religion as a tool. You can wield it how you please. You can do great things if you chose to or if you misuse it you can do great harm. If an artist sculpts a masterpiece with a chisel you don't praise the chisel you praise the artist. And if someone takes that same chisel and makes the most god awful thing you've ever seen you can't blame the tool. It's the persons fault. Or if someone takes the chisel and stabs someone to death with it you don't blame the chisel or hold it accountable. You hold the person who wielded it accountable.

I know it can be easy to blame religion for certain things but honestly it's the people themselves that are to blame not the tools they use or the excuses they hide behind.

I'm not religious by the way just playing a bit of devils advocate I guess Razz.
